[Challenge] Can you lift this one?

Recommended Posts

I have been trying to lift this baby for 2 weeks and I can get into space but I don\'t have enough speed for an orbit. If anyone can get this sucker en route to the Mun then please post the craft or screen shot so I can copy. I have a version with legs (a mod) and without (stock) so use whichever version.

Remember - what you see here needs to get on a trajectory to or orbit around the Mun. There are two tanks/engines used for landing and a third for return. You can not use these during launch.

Let me know how you go.

From what your craft look like it should be quite possible to get it in munar orbit without trouble. Don\'t have time at the moment but will try to build something later. Has it to be all stock or are mods allowed? If they are allowed, you could try for yourself with a rocket from this modpackage:

The rockets are prebuild so you have to rebuild your lander but I think that shouldn\'t take too long ;)

I\'m trying to do stock only. I have the lander legs as non-stock only because there are no (working) landing legs available at this time.

I find the three engines/three tanks and sas to be a dead weight I simply can\'t lift with any sort of speed.

Screen shot in the the first post.

Ok, it\'s done.

This baby can lift your craft plus an extra tank and engine. Screens and Craftfile in the attachment.

One advice: The ASAS only works with gimballing engines as the LV-T45 so I exchanged your LV-T30 with them.

You could also try to add RCS to your lander stage for an easier landing but I think that would make some more solid engines necessary.

Have fun with it ;D

No... just no. The current stock design doesn\'t have enough ?V to reach low Kerbin orbit, let alone attempt a Mün landing. The version with Capt Slug\'s landing legs on the first stage is... optimistic. It could easily be modified for münar flybies with stretched stages (run 2-3 tanks above each engine instead of 1), but getting the upper stage to land on the Mün will be slightly harder. Perhaps with 4-6 radial decouplers instead of 2...?

Also, why the ASAS when there are no RCS, winglets, or engines with vectored thrust for it to control? If I could understand the design process better, I could give suggestions that retain the theme while having enough ?V for a Mün mission.

edit: Or an extra stage to get the thing into orbit also works.

ASAS is great to have even if there are no winglets or vectored thrust. SAS over-corrects all the time, while ASAS doesn\'t.

Uh...otherway around...and ASAS won\'t do anything without gimballing engines or winglets. It would just be dead weight.

Actually, ASAS controls the pod too, so you pretty much get the power of one SAS with an ASAS.

I\'ve ran experiments to back up my statement. Also, ASAS weighs the same as SAS, so there\'s no dead weight involved if you choose one over the other.
