The Super Stager Challenge!

Recommended Posts

The Kerbals at Kerbal Space Center have forgotten how to make spacecraft controllable with more than one button. Rather than fix the issue, they have decided that it is best to put this button to use to stage spacecraft. All other settings now need to be set before launch until they find better ways of controlling the spacecraft. Now, since you are in charge of this space program, you need to design spacecraft capable of going places with this restriction.

THE CHALLENGE: Create a spacecraft that, once launched, can get places with staging being your only input. You are allowed to press any buttons you want before you launch the spacecraft to allow you to throttle up and turn on SAS (or keep it off if you wish). No mods (this includes no mechjeb, obviously).

RULES:

  1. No mods. This does mean no mechjeb.
  2. You can press all the buttons you want before you launch, but after you launch, the only thing you are allowed to do is stage. (SAS can do stuff if you want. Just not you)
  3. No debug menu.

On scoring:

Rank on leaderboard is based on ÃŽâ€v to target, mostly. Crashes are scored higher than flybys of the same celestial body, but not higher than flybys of a farther celestial body. Any orbit of a body that is not kerbin or kerbol is scored higher than all crashes and flybys. Any successful landing (if possible, and not on kerbin) is scored higher than all crashes/orbits. Any successful return is scored higher than all landings (again, if possible).

LEADERBOARD:

As this is a very easy challenge to cheat on, you will need to provide the craft file for your entry and also take some pictures of the journey. I do realize that pictures don't mean anything, please don't point it out.

I have successfully orbited kerbin using only staging. This challenge is not impossible, but it might be pretty hard. I'll post a video later for proof.

Can I re-order stages during flight?

I can't see why you would need to other than to fix a staging issue that you made in the VAB... so, yeah, I suppose you can.

AFAIK, once you stage an engine you can't move the icon and stage again. Unless there is some loophole in that where you can trick it. Then yes, this would be really easy.

Besides, someone did this exact thing (staging only) with a Mun landing and return. So it's definitely possible even without reshuffling the staging order.
