Change settings of a part on one side without the other side changing

Recommended Posts

I'm building an aircraft with foldable wings. I used symmetry mode to create two rotators on each side, but I need each individual rotator to have seperate settings. When I change one side, the other side's rotator changes as well. How do I just change the settings on one side without changing the other?

Pick up the item, turn symmetry off. Re-place the item. Then mod+click (Alt+click for windows) to create a duplicate of that item. From there you just have to eyeball it and get it as close as possible without symmetry.

Thanks for the quick reply. But when I make a duplicate, I can't place it in the exact same location on the other side to keep a good center of lift. The Angle snap doesn't work on the part I want to attach it to, so I cant use that, I have to place it manually.

It's probably possible to place the second part, then edit the craft file to ensure perfect symmetry.

EDIT: Problem with that is that part positions in the craft files are absolute, not relative to the parent part, so you'd have to also change the position of all the attached parts.

Why not make a craft with symmetry, make a copy and do what you have to do WITHOUT symmetry, then edit parts on the without version to match with the with version (depending what exactly you're doing)?

Oh that's a good idea. Didn't think about editing the craft file. Could I also just edit the settings in the craft file for each side without the other changing?

If you are going to go through the trouble to edit the save, it's probably easier and safer to place the first part with symmetry. Then go into the file and remove the mirror flags and sibling part identifiers.
