Has anyone ever looked into the possibility of changing how science points work?

I mean on a fundamental level. Ideally i'd like to rip it apart and rewrite it so that you can accumulate different types of science points, and use different ones to unlock different things.

I know i'm going out on a limb here, but wondering if anyone has ever dug into this at all before?
