Rotation in EVA mode?

I'm taking a page straight out of Spaceorbiter SFS - the game that Felipe used to play before he was inspired to make this.

I love EVA-ing. I do as much as I can when I have the opportunity because the point of view is absolutely tremendous.

The only "rotating" you can do is when you press V to switch the camera from Free to Orbital or Chase mode and your Kerbal rotates accordingly.

In simple terms, there IS an up/down in KSP when you are in space.

I wish to make this not so.

The ability to use the numberpad to actually rotate, not just turn or flip - but have your own custom attitude not aligned to the planet or celestial body.

I know this probably goes under the category "Fine EVA controls" in the Already Suggested box - but after playing around a bit with spaceorbiter's Universal MMU, I would pay to see this implemented in the awesomely graphical/physical world of KSP.

I didn't know that - but it's still not exactly what I was looking for.

I was aware of the roll - and the pitch is pretty much useless since he just snaps back to where he was when you let the mouse go anyways.

I was thinking more of a rotation over the left or the right side and having a fixed-camera that wasn't reliant on the planet/body or otherwise so you could have your own little way of getting around things. Trust me - spend 5 minutes in space orbiter SFS using MMU and you will see what I'm talking about. It's incredibly dizzying and awesome to do.

Yeah, KSP needs a camera without pole lock. There's no up in space.

The current method is comfortable for landed Kerbals or when they move near surface of a planet, where up and down directions are essential.

It is bearable, yet not very comfortable for use in zero-g where you don't need to take direction towards surface into account.

I wish Kerbals were controllable as they are in Free camera mode, and controllable using full spaceship controls (WASDQE/HNIJKL) in Orbital and (especially) Chase Camera modes.

Clearly since the current method is somewhat usable it does not need improvements right now when more important things are being developer. But hopefully devs will not forget to improve EVA control later when they'll be preparing the game for final release.

Well could it be possible to do this whilst on the surface but when above say 200 meters or so (given correction for elevation, which parachutes do anyways) no "pole lock" as comham described it.

Pole lock...I like it! Mind if I use that term from now on? +Rep

I would think that "free" should keep a fixed position for up and down for your kerbal.

Orbit should be relative to your craft's orbit, and chase should move with the camera, sort of like a platformer.

That's just my thought anyway.

I have this same issue. I can left drag to pitch up/down, but as soon I press forward(W) to move in that direction, the kerbal snaps back to the previous pitch. It's as if they are locked to facing tangent to the planet.

Sorry to dig up an old post but evidence that someone else has the same problem. I've seen several post on it, and the same person below always comes around saying "you're doing it wrong" without actually identifying what the "doing" that is "wrong".

I've seen other suggestions that suggest Free camera, and that has the same problem. The face away from the camera only in one axis. The pitch is still locked to the orbital plane.

Note I have "EVA's auto rotate to camera" turned on.

Absolutely hate, hate, hate the fact that in space my Kerbal cannot face a ship and EVA "forward" directly toward it unless it's on the same horizontal plane. Never understood why this was implemented in the fashion that it was, unless it's a game engine limitation.

I'm going to upvote Kasuha's idea here.

As it is now, the control keys on EVA (WASD, shift, and CTRL) are simply translation controls, and work almost identically to the RCS controls of spacecraft. Kerbals on an EVA could be controlled the same way: control their facing and orientation with WASDQE, use the RCS controls for translation, and shift/CTRL for the jump jets and the stand-on-an-asteroid-like-in-Armaggedon jets.
