Capsule Musuem

Recommended Posts

Was just thinking: Wouldn't it be nice to have a building on the KSC campus that was used as a museum for significant capsules? Something like this: When your capsule splashes down, returning Jeb, Bill, and Bob from their first Mun landing, you click on Recover and it brings up a dialog asking if you want to recycle or preserve your capsule. If you choose to preserve it, it shows up at the Kerbal Air and Space Museum, where it is visible in a large hall with all of your other preserved capsules. You are presented with the opportunity to write a title and description for it, much like for a flag. What does everyone think? Good idea, or am I just overly nostalgic? :)

For the most part, I agree this would be a neat feature to have in-game, albeit something for later updates once KSP is mostly scope/feature complete.

The one problem that needs to be addressed is how to handle crew pods / parts from add-ons / mods:

- Say that a player builds a spacecraft using one of my FusTek Station Parts, flies it on a mission, recovers and puts it in the museum

- Somewhere down the line, the player decides to uninstall FusTek

Since KSP generally removes crafts with missing / invalid parts, would a museum piece containing the non-existent FusTek part now disappear? Or would the game somehow store a local duplicate copy of the part assets (at the risk of bloating the filesystem)? What if a future update to the add-on changes the shape and geometry of the add-on part - would the museum piece retroactively take on the updated appearance?

I'm not big on the idea of a Museum in the game. Mainly because it doesn't really add anything, and if one really wanted to do it it can be already done. Either by litterally going out and getting the capsule directly, or by designing a mock setup and putting it on display somewhere.

My biggest issue with a recover to museum mechanic is technically if you "recover it" its not the same part (obviously) and thus is more of a trophy of achievement, rather than an actual artifact. If you do it the hard and current way it IS the same part, and can be displayed ANYWHERE you wish.

The simple fact there is already display models out in the world (one at the KSC and an old design at the abandon airfield) makes me feel the world is already a museum, so why add one?

Yeah, I haven't seen the "Museum" suggestion pop-up in a while. I think HarvesteR said he was interested in it way back in, so who knows where that stands anymore, and there are way bigger issues/features to [hopefully] be implemented. This is really just a "vanity" feature.

I was thinking something along the same lines.

It really would be cool to add a museum of recovered missions, along with mission stats for each one.

This should obviously be a building in the KSC complex, as putting it in the outer complex, while really cool, would likely put a little too much load on people's computers.

This could be done with a simple simplified snapshot model.

edit:

As an after thought, this shouldn't exactly be high priority. However, as a vanity feature, this would be a real plus.
