Non-Kerbal Spacecraft Model Thread

With the advent of arc5555's excellent paper models of KSP parts, we can soon hope to see an influx of Kerbal craft models on the Fan Works forum. And that's awesome.

BUT!

KSP-based papercraft aren't the only papercraft, just as paper isn't the only medium available to modellers. Some others that spring to mind:

  • plastic kits
  • 3d CAD models
  • flyable model rockets
  • concept drawings
  • woodwork (yeah, good luck with that  )

And as the most recent discussion I found to touch on this subject is almost two years old, I proudly present...(drum roll, please)...

The Spacecraft Model Thread!*

*no Kerbals allowed, except if Jeb insists

So let's go create something, fellow space enthusiasts! Click, cut, draw, drill, fold, glue, paint and post the results here! It doesn't matter how well it's done, just that you had a hand in the making of it! I'll post my little paper fleet as soon as I can get to the camera. Meanwhile, here are some links:

Space&spacecraft on Pinterest - great source of inspiration!

AXM paper space scale models (detailed shuttles, ISS, SpaceX stuff etc.)

Nielspapermodels (some early rocketry stuff)

Leo Cherkashyns' site (great plans for soviet/russian papercraft)

What do you think of the idea? :)

There you go! Considering the hadron our forum has for SpaceX [/horriblejoke], it's only fitting that the first submission be a Dragon! In the CRS-2 mission configuration, to be more precise. I finished it a few weeks ago; took 2 A4 sheets and quite a while, since I don't yet have much experience with such small scales- it's just about 6 cm high. Sorry for the potato quality photos though :/

Euro coin for scale :)

I was thinking about maybe printing a model, but I rather dislike the feel and quality of full colour PP prints. Other printing options mean a lot of fitting and painting and I am not sure I am up for that. It would be pretty cool to pick and model something that is fairly mechanical though. I have always liked the move-y toy-y models. Nothing shows how something works like holding it in your hand. Of course, to model it you need to understand it too :P

Hey those paper ones look cool..... is that common? Are there many such models?

I was thinking the other day how cool it would be to have an Apollo Command Module with a Russian Soyuz for comparison.

I wouldn't exactly call it common...but there are seemingly quite a lot of people with an interest in it. There are several Apollo models (here's the whole Saturn in 1:96) but this is the only Soyuz I found, in 1:100. You will probably need to rescale one of them if you want a direct comparison, though 1:96 and 1:100 are close enough.

Well I used to design my own papercraft stuff, so here is some of it.

~snip~

Oh, wow! Those are your designs? I really like the zeppelin, it looks like something straight out of a steampunk novel :D

Anyways, here is my latest completed thing: the Mercury capsule in 1:36...I think (changed the scale before printing). The design is by Ton Noteboom (here's his site) and is really quite detailed.

Nice! Does it say on his web site what scale each model is?

Sweet! How would I go about scaling the 1:96 scale Saturn V to 1:100?

I'm...not really sure, you could try downsizing the pages to 96% before printing? It's not going to be exactly 1:100, but within a nice margin of error :P

Edit: I'm going to start my next project as soon as I find the time. It's going to be an old workhorse. Guess! :)

I know that somebody already posted a cygnus on here, but that doesn't bean I can't be proud of myself:P

Hey, it looks great! Also: your workspace is a lot less cluttered than mine :D

Aaand as I didn't visit the forums much during January, here are the long overdue pics of the finished Soyuz! It has since found its new home as a birthday gift for a fellow space enthusiast :P
