Purpose of space station parts from KSO pack?

I have the KSO mod, love it! However I am running into one question the forum thread does not answer ( not that I found anyway)

The station parts, I.E. the kerbal lab, green house etc, the science parts... What do they do? They don't conduct science that I've found so far. Maybe I'm just screwing something up.

As far as I remember, there's some kind of main science lab part, can remember for certain though, haven't used KSO in a while.

one acts as a alternative to the stock lab (kerbal lab) and the other has a materials bay inside (hydroponics)
