Only give rep for returning *launched* Kerbals

Recommended Posts

In 0.24, the game seems to make little distinction between those Kerbals who have been launched, and those who have sat on a launchpad before walking back to the Astronaut Complex. I shouldn't be able to improve my reputation by rolling a Kerbal out to the launchpad and then immediately recovering the craft. The game knows "pre-launch" as a possible state; maybe require vehicles to not be in that state before they can be recovered for rep? It wouldn't stop people from setting throttle to zero and staging, or something like that, but it would prevent me using up the diminishing recovery rep on non-missions.

Well, actually, I figure that the game should scale rep returns for recovered Kerbals according to how far they've been -- a kerbal to the Mun and back gives less than, say, a kerbal to Duna and back. Obviously kerbals recovered from the pad should give zero.

Did you happen to complete a contract when you were doing that? Or did you get any Science? I ask because I've either completed a contract or gained Science at every launch so far. Perhaps they're points for having enough balls to sit on top of a ton of fuel...

sooo the suggestion is to remove that reputation if the rockets were never fired.

Preferably: That and take a mission time into account too.

So that a few seconds "leap" wouldn't give anything at all, or: almost anything.

I think the best solution would be to have the rep reward for returning kerbals be based on how far away from the launchpad the kerbal made it (at the farthest point, not at the time of recovery). So launchpad =0, LKO= X, Munar orbit= Y, etc. Not sure if this scales well or would trivialize rep too fast.

I assumed there was a "diminishing returns" mechanic for rep, the same way as there was for science. The first few vessels you recover that flew at Kerbin give you science, but then it drops off fasts (0 after 2-3 more recoveries).

If Rep is working the same way, you'll get some rep for recovering those first few kerbals, but then little to nothing after that. If this is the case, you should be getting that rep one way or another anyway, the way you're doing it is just getting it into your bank a little earlier.

the point being: If rep is like science, it's not going to matter in the long term.

Mod Edit: Similar thread merged in here.

First things first, not sure if this goes here or in the bugs and support thread, secondly I admit that while I did look to see if this had already been mentioned I didn't search very hard. Apologies if I'm out of line on either of these points.

But to the point, I was doing a little experimentation with custom Kerbal textures on my new career save, using a stack of Mk1 pods on the runway for 100% return of funds. However, When I recovered the pod rod, I noticed a substantial gain in reputation for returning the six Kerbals home. Even though their vessel never even launched. Personally this is just a bit of an immersion breaker and I don't intend on spamming this to cheat reputation points, but I know that some will, and I feel like perhaps this wasn't intended to work like this.

Again, please correct this if it's in the wrong somehow.

EDIT: Thanks Techicalfool for relocating this

Should probably change the title to "Possible Flaw in Reputation Gain." Currently, it suggests that you have a fix for the problem.

Mod Edit: End of merged thread!
