What do Rovers need to have?

Recommended Posts

That's nice to know. I've really been missing it. The thread was still saying it didn't quite work yet, however, at least in win64.

Maybe it works because I'm using OS X, but I don't think so.

More, the Munar polar terrain is definitely not rover friendly...

That also depends on what you do on the Mun. I use them for two things. Pushing around modular pieces to build a base and I also like to go all Bo and Luke Duke with my rovers. Launch them off the edge of a crater at 20-25m/s. *insert Dixie tune here*

Well, if you just want to make some treking around ( and you land near one of those spots in the Mun that can give you access to 4 or 5 biomes in a short range ), rovers are cool enough. But given the faulty mechanics of the KSP terrain and wheels ( especially the "lock suspension for some seconds when you change polygon" ), anything that passes 200 km is a chore ( that you can't reliably do in physics time acceleration ... thus making any trip bigger than 200 km taking 3+ h of undivided attention RL time ) and requires extensive pre-planning routewise ( kerbalmaps.com is your friend :D ) ...

I wanted to collect your opinions on what rovers need to have.

Rovers are a fun way to explore the worlds you visit. It seems a shame to travel all that way just to do a quick "flags and footprints" before getting straight back into the ship and heading for home.

Adding rovers adds a lot of extra challenge to a Mun landing. Firstly, you have to figure out how to attach the rover to your ship and deploy it after landing. Next, you have to figure out how to drive it. Making a lightweight rover that can handle the rough terrain, poor traction and low gravity without overturning and smashing to smithereens is quite a challenge.

Prior to the 0.24 patch, I started messing around with space planes. I was mainly building them to experiment with reusability, but also ended up doing a fair amount of joyriding in them. I tried landing them on the Mun and Minmus for a bit of fun. As it turned out, they perform better as rovers than anything I built specifically for the purpose.
