The newbie challenge

Recommended Posts

Note: this challenge requires someone who has never played KSP before, whether that be a sibling or friend or... hypothetical monster?

The newbie challenge aims to get people to understand rocket science a little better (I get a little annoyed when people say 'It's not rocket science'). The real aim is to get your friend/family member(s?) to complete the basics of kerbal space program, and maybe some more advanced stuff along the way. They must build their craft on their own with some guidance, and they must pilot the crafts (unless something terrible happens). You can't say stuff like 'Put this there, put that here' ect. No proof is really needed, it's just a bit of an activity to with which brings you and your friends and family together. Plus it's something to do. You wouldn't bother doing many of these challenges yourself, as you would have probably done them already a long time ago.

There are 3 goals for the challenge:

  1. Orbit Kerbin
  2. Land a Kerbal on the mun
  3. Land on Minmus in career mode (that does mean researching and getting the money)

Along with two extra goals, which are just optional:

  • Send something to Duna (lander, rover, orbital probe, ect.)
  • Fly-by (or even orbit around) Jool and investigate a moon

There are some achievements for completing missions:

- 100% newbie (completing the challenge) [+5]

- Going the extra mile (complete one of the extra challenges) [+10]

- Going another extra mile (complete both extra challenges) [+30]

- Dude, how much time do you have? (complete another reasonably difficult challenge) [points varied and must be approved]

- First time's the charm (complete all main goals first-time...sort of. Testing stuff on kerbin is ok) [+10]

- I'm calling the exterminators (experience a kraken attack and attempt at explaining it to your friend) [+1 per kraken]

- I'm calling the exterminator and psychiatrist (complete the 'I'm calling the exterminators' thing and still complete the mission) [+10]

- 1 is the magic number (Complete at least one mission with an SSTO) [+11]

- 6 is the magic number (experience the '666,666m' kraken) [+6]

- Scott Manley was here (Land on Tylo or Eve) [+50]

- Kerbal media (Come up with some sort of parody for KSP. Because goldfish) [+5, +10 if I like it]

- First comment! (first to enter) [+1]

- Suggest something (You have suggested something to add to the rules, goals, ect. and they have been added) [+1]

- Things are getting real (use the realism over-haul package) [+10]

- Impressive (complete the challenge using the most impressive methods) [Variable points]

- I'm addicted (well done, you got them hooked into KSP. More funds for squad, more updates for you!) [+5]

Most mods are allowed. Any form of auto-pilot is forbidden (such as mechjeb).

Have fun!
