RCS has all directions but one...

Recommended Posts

I finally got into my first orbit and then elected to do EVA report, of course good ol' Bob Kerman decides to let go. I have been trying to use RCS to get him back to the command pod, there is only one direction I cant figure out how to move.

The only way I can think to describe it is if you were to bend at the waist then raise up, is there no way to rotate in that direction?

WASD, shift and control are the EVA directional buttons. QE will roll, and you can pitch and yaw by dragging left click. If EVA is set to rotate on move (changeable in settings, under misc. keybinds IIRC) the pitch/yaw won't stay.

Turning off rotate on move will allow you to point the Kerbal in any direction, with spacebar to reset rotation.

A workaround is to change the camera between free and orbital, which will change the plane the Kerbal aligns to.

The EVA Pack controls are a little funky because orientation depends on the camera's orientation. I wish you could set a camera mode so that it would behave like in Space Engineers, so you have full translation and rotation controls.

You are probably missing Shift (up) and control (down).

W is forward, S is back, A is left, D is right, all relative to the screen

No, there should be another vector to move along, and OP put it pretty well. Looking for a 'head over heels' rotational control.

I've also wanted this control vector as well. I think you can turn off the kerbal orienting to the camera automatically but it can be a little difficult to keep em under control that way and it don't really give the desired effect.

As MadChris 48 suggested, there is a way to control pitch on EVA, but it's tricky to keep other movements under control.

First, go to Settings > Input > Other and uncheck "EVAs autorotate to camera". During an EVA align the camera so that the Kerbal is facing away from you, then left-click and drag to pitch them up and down.

EVA controls give you direct up-down, left-right, forward-back translational controls.

Q & E give you yaw rotational control.

Mouse + EVA set to rotate on move allows both yaw and pitch rotation.

But there is no direct roll rotation control. You cannot just pres one key to tell Jeb to rotate to his left, while still facing forward.

You could fake it with a combo though.

to rotate 90degree counterclockwise, you would need to , for example, pitch up 90, yaw left 90, then pitch down 90. With a reset of reference axis after each move.

And hope your view rotation doesn't hit vertical up or down, as you hit a "wall" there

Sorry, but the 3-d orientation model of KSP is not really 3d, more like 2-d with north/south extensions.

You encounter the same limitations with EVA, docking ships, even orbiting *exactly* over a north or south pole.
