Exploding solar panels

Recommended Posts

Tonight I loaded my game and first task was to get my probes to Duna and Ike. They were already on their interplanetary journey so it was just simple achieve orbit maneuvers. Well first probe Gets in Duna's SOI and I decide I have enough delta V to not even bother with an aerobrake, and have no heat shield with using deadly reentry.

Either way I have my 3 stock nuclear engines fire up and start the slow down process to achieve orbit. 2 minutes into the burn one of my solar panels explodes. I am at an altitude of at least 500,000 m. I check the log by hitting F3 and it says solar panel destroyed be reentry heat. Ok I use a few mods, maybe just a stupid glitch I can deal with that. I check my other 2 panels and 1 is at around 15 C yet the other is around 500 C. Thinking maybe somehow the exhaust from my engines is affecting them except they are all symmetrical and far away from the engines. I kill the engines and see the temp on the high temp one go up a bit more but then starts to drop (very slowly I must add). I end up having to watch the temperature and do multiple burns to get in orbit. Ok, no problem.

Well my Ike probe hits the SOI and I plan for its orbital burn. Set it up and burn and now that I'm aware I start looking at the temp of my solar panels. 2 are fine and one is rising rapidly. I do a quicksave just to test it thinking maybe its something with my design. Well I let the panel overheat and explode. Ok done. Everything else should be fine. I check the other 2 and now another one has a temp rising rapidly again. This time though even when I kill the engines the temp doesn't drop so I can't control it.

I have restarted the game a few times thinking maybe it was a bug, but no luck.

Any thoughts as to what's going on?

Mods used:

Deadly reentry

Kethane

KER

FAR

Kerbal alarm clock

Kerbal joint reinforcement

Interstellar (I have no waste heat also if that is what you are thinking and have radiators)

Procedural fairings

scansat

Tac life support

Thanks in advance

Need a picture of the ship. Sounds like it isn't heat shielded.

I can get a picture of the ship but I am well above the atmosphere of duna. My second probe was over Ike which has no atmosphere so in either case why would I need a heat shield?

Edit : Remember too I am not aerobraking with either probe.

I think it's a combination problem:

  • Your solar panels are too close to your NERVAs, causing them to heat up
  • Interstellar modifies heat directly, ignoring DRE

DRE and Interstellar have their own heat models and they do not play well together. AFAIK, you can only work around the problem or uninstall one mod. The clearest example of this problem is RAPIERs and SABRES – if you activate them in airbreathing mode without any intake air, they will instantly explode due to overheating.

You may be able to save your probes with two workarounds:

  • longer, slower burns while watching the solar panel temperatures
  • close your solar panels and rely on the NERVA alternators for electricity during the burns

Edit: one more thing: last I checked, Interstellar's VAB Thermal helper doesn't account for engine heat production or received microwave power, so you have to figure that out by hand.

Here is my Ike probe, They are the first 4 of the album. Both probes are EXACTLY the same.

Is there a way to insert individual steam screenshots into the forum without having to use, well I guess it would be a 4th party (steam is already technically the 3rd)?

[*]close your solar panels and rely on the NERVA alternators for electricity during the burns

I have tried closing the panels with the same effect. Good call though and thank you for the info. Do you know how exactly the heat works in interstellar? I am clueless. Half the parts Im still trying to firure out how they work and theres no documentation I can find. Either way, technically all 3 panels should heat up and explode at the same time under the scenarios I put them under testing this then. I have also used both mods prior to .24 and they always played nice together. Then again, mods are mods and one stupid change in one can upset the balance of all of them.
