Linking Communication Sats to Base Command problem

Ive been launching Communication satellites above kerbal as I want to start sending out probes to the distant planets but I can seem to link them to each other or to base command, I thought it was standard but do I need a mod ?

Com links and relays are part of the RemoteTech 2 mod.

Currently, communication satellites are in the same vein as space stations: largely useless and pretty much just for show.

You'll need a mod to give them a purpose like DeMatt suggested.

To clarify: in stock you can just go for it. You don't even need an antenna to control the probe, only to transmit science back, and the antennae work where-ever the probe is.
