How to add "Control from Here" to the right-click menu of a part?

Command pods and docking ports have the option to control from that location, which re-orients your nav-ball. This is particularly useful while docking with a port that is situated at an angle from the command pod.

Well, I'm making a VTOL engine and if you're going to land a plane vertically (and not on its tail as I've done . . . sort of successfully), it would be very helpful if the nav-ball could be re-oriented. Of course I could give the part docking port or maybe probe core functionality, but that would have side effects I'd rather avoid. Is there a part module that would just add what I need? I'm not looking for a plugin, I want to do this entirely stock.

i see the issue with giving the engine that thing - your navball would be off center from your ship, I would think. What might work is making a small flat probe body, in its .cfg file use that physicsSignificance = 1 thing to make it be ignored for aerodynamics and mass - and you can then attach it to the top of the craft, giving you an appropriately oriented thing.

It occurs to me that there is an aerodynamic antenna part somewhere in a far past thread - that might actually be a candidate to slap a commandModule node into - and it serves a purpose other than being a hacky fix.

Well, the nav ball being off center isn't bad, so long as it's oriented upward. The problem is that it makes the plane unmanned, which isn't that big a deal, it's just not what I want to do. Jeb doesn't want his fancy new jump jet to fly off and leave him on an island or something.

The problem is that it makes the plane unmanned

Wrong ! You can have as much as command pod as you like in a vessel (one very nice KSP feature :) ).

Try create a plane with a mk1/mk2 occkpit, a mk1 pod, a 1.25m diameter probe core and one octo/cubic probe core. You just have to strap a reluctant kerbal on the seat yourself (without forgetting he'll escape as soon as you turn your eyes off him like adding parts) !

docking port (junior) on top/bottom is also an option as you have the "control from here" command.

What I'm saying is that it would allow the plane to be operated without a Kerbal, not that the cockpit wouldn't have a Kerbal on launch.

docking module would be the best way to do it without a plugin and without giving unmanned capability. set the "nodeType =" to something unique so it won't try to dock with other stock docking ports.

Ah, I hadn't thought of the incompatibility option. That's a great idea.
