SLS Parts: Oddly Weak Decoupler and Lack of Separator

Recommended Posts

It's seems pretty weird that the SLS decoupler has an ejection force of 100, whereas the Rockomax decoupler for the 2.5 meter has a force of 250, I believe. The larger diameter part has a weaker decoupler, and from my experience, the 100 ejection force really isn't enough. Also, it'd be nice to have a separator. So is this intentional, is this an oversight, or am I just plain missing something?

There is a whole bunch of parts missing from the 3.75m line-up. A short 3.75-2.5 adapter and a low power poodle equivalent are the main ones I'm looking forward to. :)

The main problem with the 3.75m decoupler is that its physics significance is set to 0 which is very odd. :/

AFAIK, 0 means it isn't physicsless.

It's a fact, 0.23.5 parts were probably rushed.

Still though, it's probably one of the least used decouplers. SLS parts are usually used as the bottom heavy lifting stage, and that's all I can think of...

It's mostly used between lower stages with a KS-25x4 engine cluster and upper stages with a KR-2L engine. I rarely use it as a payload separator, because there aren't too many 3.75 m parts apart from the inefficient fuel tanks.

On the other hand, the 3.75 m decoupler is a really useful structural part, if you want to get creative. You can easily build wide landers with a low center of mass around them. It's a massless part, so there's no penalty for using it.
