Kerbal doesn't want to get rescued?

Hey, i'm a noob on this board and if i'm doing something wrong or this was already answered in another post just direct me to it.

I have taken on this sparkling new "rescue a kerbal in orbit" mission in the new 24.2 (how these bloody idiots got launched in orbit still mystifies me) and I have come to the point were I maneuver myself in to the helpless orbital victim. now up and to this point everything seems fine, I get in viewing-range and prepare to switch over to him... when the bugger tells me politely that i do not own him, therefore I can't control him.

I move in closer and try to access him again and i get told again, I don't own him so i don't get to control him.

At this point I Start watching tutorials on kerbal rescue mission, but none of them had any problems with this, it worked with every single one on the first try. At this point I suspect there is something i'm not getting, maybe a key I have to press or something?

So maybe it was of my own ignorance or just simply didn't get it. either way I need help with this problem.

I don't think you can switch using the map view or tracking center. You have to get within 2.5 km, and then use the [ or ] keys to switch.

None of those tuturials switch to the Kerbal using the map screen

Yeah, it took me a while to find this as well (I'm a noob, too). I tried to switch on map view by clicking, and even tried to switch in the tracking station, but it said I did not own hime. I ended up sending Jeb on an EVA (that almost stranded Jeb) then tried to right click the stranded guy (thinking maybe I had to touch him on EVA with the rescuer). Since it's a new career (first attempt at the "real" career, not "science"), I have no RCS, so I had to get within a few hundred meters by orbit matching, then EVA. I even tried pushing him with Jeb, towards Jeb's ship.

You need to use the bracket keys to switch while in flight.

I´d still like a feature where a kerbal can grab another one in EVA... that could add some drama to the situation, and you can actually rescue kerbals with empty jetpack, without the need to maneuver the ladder of the capsule so close and so steady that you have time to switch to the stranded kerbal and grab the ladder in free flight...

You can look up and change the keys to switch "vessels" or to a kerbal on EVA in the settings menu in the last section of the key bindings. As said here before, just switch to the kerbal by using the key, then get him inside the capsule by jetpack.
