CoM View Slippage - bad design or mod issue?

Recommended Posts

Skip to 2:05 and you'll see the camera start to slip behind the rocket at the SRBs fly away. Now, I've seen this happen to people before and it's usually been a bug with some part, but I haven't started searching for which one. If anyone has any ideas let me know. Could it also just be bad rocket design causing my CoM to really get all wonky after SRBs drop? I'm doubting it but want to make sure. I already flew a similar craft, smaller but same boosters, same lifter engine cluster, same interstage and 2nd stage engine - and didn't have a single problem during launch. Any guidance appreciated.

Direct reason: even though you separated your boosters, the game still thinks they are part of your rocket. As they fly away and back, the CoM of the total moves backwards too and your camera follows it.

Root cause: unclear. Some people report that happening with stock game but I had never this happen to me.

It may not be a problem with the boosters, if you have any mods make sure they are the latest versions (I know Realchute had an issue where it would cause this type of behavior). Also check your output log for errors.

Bingo. I thought I had replaced the chutes on this rocket already, but apparently I did not. They are radials on a 1.25m rocket inside the fairing so I forgot about them. Derp.

Additionally, I discovered why the rocket broke apart at the end of the video. I'm using 3 separate fuel tanks in my lifter stage and I attached the Klockheed Martian fuel drain sensor to the top tank, which obviously ran out of fuel first and triggered the next stage, which of course reduced the rigidity of the rocket. Using TAC Fuel Balancer fixed that problem.

And now I'm in orbit. Yay!

Definitely something that fell off your rocket, but didn't leave it.

Usually cause by a mod with scruffy models.

Kethane's scanner loves doing this.

The first release of the Claw did this.

TAC LS canisters that break off can sometimes do this.

And yes, stock can do this. If you strutted, then shifted, then re-strutted in the VAB, so you have a few floating strut-divots hanging around your ship, it *loves* to do this.

P.s.s.

I have never seen this on a ship that did not incorporate some form of 'illegal' clipping. Just because the VAB allowed overlap without having to f12, doesn't mean your design is pure.

And again yes, this includes the perfectly harmless everyone-does-it rotation of an octo cube into the surface of its owner.
