Command Modules

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been thinking of this for a while and was just wondering, why not include some command modules based on real spacecraft (like how the command pod Mk 1 is like the Mercury and the Mk 1-2 command pod is like the Apollo command modules)? This idea mainly came from the recent release of the Dragon v2 from SpaceX (which looks amazing if I may add). So anyway, why not add real world space modules into the game? (or at least command modules based off real world modules). A few modules I was thinking of include:

- Dragon v2 (obviously :P)

- the Soyuz crew capsule

- Orion module (although it does look quite similar to the Mk 1-2)

- the Gemini space craft

- maybe even Vostok 1 :D

Would anyone else be interested in seeing these implemented at some point?

Well i dont rly see a point here, other than aesthetics tbh. I can't think of a good reason to implement another 3 man pod or something orion like (with up to 6 people if I remember corectly).

I do agree that those pods look awesome and would be fun to use, but gameplay wise they dont add much. And the vab/sph menues are already pretty crowded in the stock game.

There's no way squad is going to directly implement a real world part into the game, the whole point of the game was for it to be different from real life. Also, there are plenty of mods that already add these parts to the game, which is another reason squad is very unlikely to do it.

Devs are trying to keep the stock part count at minimum while they're developing the game because the more of them is there the more work it is to update them after each change. Hopefully we'll be getting more parts as the game gets close to final. In the meantime you can use parts from many mods that are available. Dragon capsule is available as well.

Replica parts don't belong in the stock game IMO as it interferes a bit with the modular construction style, though some are obviously inspired by real life spacecraft. There are a bunch of beautifully modeled and textured mods available of historical or planned spacecraft if you really want to fly a Saturn V or N1 or other real life ship.

The only thing I'd add would be a Gemini analogue (not a replica). We already have one-Kerbal and three-Kerbal command pods, so I think a two-Kerbal design is needed. The biggest problem with that is the lack of an intermediate size of part between 1.25m (Mercury) and 2.5m (Apollo).

People already linked you to the Dragon Capsule and the Taurus HCV. Another mod that might be interesting for you is Home Grown Rocket parts.

HGR includes parts for Soyuz and Shenzhou spacecraft, a small spherical command pod and a stockalike Gemini pod. The size is a bit non-standard (1.875 meters) but parts for launch vehicle of this size as well as adapters are included.

So the modding community has you covered for now even though it really would be nice to see a Gemini-like pod and something that has more crew capacity than the Mk.1-2 (maybe it could just be something like a 2.5 to 3m Hitchhiker-thing as addon for the Mk.1-2) eventually once more important things are done.

As for something like Soyuz/Shenzhou in stock...Well, you can emulate something that looks like a Shenzhou for example using the Mk.1-2 as descent module and a Hitchhiker as orbital module. Not perfect, I know. There might be better replica designs in the spacecraft exchange. It is impressive what some can do using just stock.
