(Bug?) OSX locks up sometimes in VAB with S1 SRB-KD25k placement

I've seen this now a few times, and cannot get it to reproduce every time.

When placing the S1 SRB-KD25k booster with 6 or 8 symmetry (career mode) I will try and place it, it's not lined up the way I like, try again, etc, and after a few tries, my mac will beachball on me and I have to kill the KSP process. I have an i7 mac, OS 10.7, with 12 GB RAM. So far it's the only thing that has ever crashed KSP for me. I'll try and work out a way to reproduce it, or at least document if it happens only after a certain elapsed time of play, etc. Note that I can restart KSP, and go right back to that vehicle, and place the SRBs just fine.

When you place it, do you change the symmetry mode after the SRB is attached to the craft? If so, it's an open issue that seems to only occur on Linux and Mac OS X. It's definitely still present in KSP 0.24. The workaround is to only change symmetry when the part is not touching the craft.

If you're having a different issue, or have different steps to reproduce it, definitely post them here so we can try to track it down.

I have a similar problem, but it usually happens when I have a lot of mods and then try to add using symmetry massive parts. But it isn't very consistent and I haven't had the beachball of unhappiness for a while now.

I'm pure vanilla, I've only been playing a couple weeks (or is it one week?).

I rarely have to kill any process on my machine, if it were not for the odd power failure every couple years, or updates that require a restart, my machine would have an uptime measured in years.

OK, you are right about changing the symmetry, but the game changes the symmetry without any input sometimes. Say you have 4X symmetry for reaction controls on the CM, and you are using 6X for boosters. If you move the mouse past the 4X stuff, the symmetry changes to 4 from 6, and it locks up. It might happen more with the big SRB because it's so bloody hard to place them properly as the pointer has to be on the booster (which then seems to center), as well as over the radial separator.

I'm thinking it's reproducible this way (brush past a different symmetry while moving a large SRB).

The game does have a bit of an annoying feature where if you're attaching something to a part that was itself attached using symmetry, the only options it will allow you to select are the symmetry of the part you're trying to attach to, and 1x. For example, if you attach fuel tanks in 6x symmetry, any further parts you try to place on those fuel tanks will be limited to 1x and 6x symmetry options.

Use X and Alt+X to switch symmetry up/down when the game changes it while you're trying to place a part. Saves a bit of time, and can get around the game's automatic adjustments of symmetry. :/
