KSP Interstellar as an official DLC?

Recommended Posts

I'd love to see Fractal as a part of Squad team and KSP dev and his mod as an official addon. Some new solar systems (procedural, but with the same seed for everybody + some pre-made ones) Further progression of space program. So waht do you think?

No.

One of the things many of us hate most about the modern monetization model in games is that they make what should be part of the stock game into DLC packs that you have to pay extra for. I do not want this plague in KSP, and I think I speak for quite a few of us here when I say that.

Good DLC: something extra that has nothing to do with the basic game and carries no "content"--a cosmetic bit in case you want to look or feel different while playing it

Examples:

  • different color spacesuits/craft decals
  • different faces and haircuts for Kerbals
  • cosmetic planet retexturing
  • addons to the Kerbal Space Center or new Kerbal buildings with no game benefit to visiting them

Acceptable DLC: carries side-content of equal value to existing content without adding anything that will feel like a slap in the face to those who don't have it

Examples:

  • more parts variations-structural/wings/etc.
  • new planets of similar difficulty in reaching, with nothing more special on them than on existing planets
  • space obstacles/dangers that you can receive contracts and basic rewards for going past, studying, or dealing with

Bad DLC: taking part of the main game out and forcing players to pay extra to finish the game

Examples:

  • more technological progression
  • better parts or entirely new types of parts
  • planets/stars at a greater distance, or with new content to see when you reach them

DLC is more of a late-game kind of thing. Once KSP (the full version) is released, there are going to be so many players and features that adding anything else might disrupt the stability of the game or of other mods significantly.

Example: Squad could release a DLC with epic shaders for anyone that happens to be playing KSP on a supercomputer. Since it's very attractive, but might lag out many players' games, Squad earns money from people who really want epic graphics in their game while keeping the players who play the game on a netbook or laptop happy.
