Designing your own parts

Recommended Posts

Hello!

As we know rocketry is all about design. Currently we have parts that are previously done by developers/modders. But I thought that it would be fun to have some kind of simplified editor to make own designs for rocket, rover, satellite, space station (and many other) parts which would need some base materials: different metals, electronics, propellants etc.

Of course, it would be a lot of work, but I believe that it's doable. Just depends of how much detail is used in the editor system.

Feel free to share your thoughts

Making models etc. would be pretty complicated, but maybe if you could repurpose the stock models, resize them, and then tweak the stats (mass, ISPs for vacuum and atmosphere, thrust, resource production/utilisation etc.), that would be cool. The amount of "points" you could distribute between those categories could be determined by how far up the science tree you are.

I don't know how I missed that procedural parts topic (I used search). I knew somebody must have thought something similar.

Part of it would be indeed procedural parts, but addition to that would be different (new) designs. If there were different base materials, then it could affect physics too. Everything from structural pieces to whole boosters. But no new part classes, that's the "job" for modders, probably.

Maybe it's too much for one game and I'm thinking too much about designing. Perhaps I shouldn't waste time on these kind of things and apply for an aerospace engineer :D

// Shuttle designing would be also nice to have.
