What does it take to achieve orbit around duna.

Is this not an orbit? Apparently the contract system doesn't think so.

EDIT: Tracking station says I'm sub-orbital too.

Probably too low, try raising the orbit above 50km.

ETA-Yep, just tried it with my Duna orbiter. It stays sub orbital until the periapsis rises above 50km.

Not sure what exact values are but my guess is you need to raise your periapsis above 50 km.

On Kerbin, anything with periapsis above 23 km counts as orbit (camera changes mode) but for purpose of contracts you need periapsis at 70 km as well.

Hmm, well I'll give it a shot, the wiki says ~41k is atmosphere.

I've had some weird status' displayed in the tracking station... things in low but stable orbits that are said to be sub orbital... in another case I had a lander returning from minmus... the game told me it was on an escape trajectory, despite displaying a trajectory that had its perapsis well within Kerbin's atmosphere (and its apopasis no farther out than minmus).

I don't quite understand what causes it... it seems to be at extremes.. ie, very low orbits, or very high orbits... but... still, it should be able to tell those things precisely

The kerbalpedia/status/contract figures for atmospheres are oversimplifications that are wrong in some situations. Note that they've actually been wrong since kerbalpedia (the info panel) was implemented, but we haven't cared until contracts came along.
