RCS to the Mun.

Recommended Posts

Make it to the Mun with only RCS thrusters.

No using any solid, liquid fuel AT ALL.

If you can do this you are either the smartest person ever, or the luckiest person ever.

If anyone accomplishes this i will be suprised.

P.S.: As a bonus challenge, try making it to Minmus using only RCS thrusters.

Current stock RCS thrusters (the omni and the 4-way) have such a terrible ISP that making it to LKO with them is already a challenge in itself. (And i'm not talking about bringing any payload) - you'll be already suffering very high part count :P

With the O-10 monoprop engine that's a completely different story - it's completely feasible - and it's not really difficult with the new way monopropellant is drained (current stage tanks are drained first)

can you use the new rcs thruster that runs of of lfo, but is horribly inefficient to cut down on part count?

Up until .18, and then since .23.5, RCS thrusters have been physicsless, ie the game disregards their quoted mass and drag. This really helps monopropellant-powered ships, going some way to offset the low Isp and inferior tankage. The new O-10 engine is as suitable as any for a Mun mission, and even if you only use the classic thrusters it will still be perfectly possible, you'll just need a beefier first stage on the launcher.

The O-10 uses standart Liquid fuel controls instead of the RCS ones, including the possibility of throtle ;)

TBH I already did a RCS only impactor to the Mun by accident in 24.2 . Just wanted to test a RCS propelled launcher and when I got to orbit I noticed I had enough RCS to get to the Mun ... so why not ? :D I assume that doing a RCS only shi to go to the Mun or Minmus will be quite possible based on that experience.

I wouldn't include the O-10 in the "RCS" category just because it uses monopropellant

But they're not specifically banned, either.

EDIT: and RCS stands for Reaction Control System. O-10s have reaction. They control the craft's velocity. Therefore, RCS.:)

In any case, using pure RCS blocks is theoretically not that much more difficult from using O-10s, as both are physicsless.
