Why I'm Glad Squad is the KSP Developer

If we're going to talk about copycats, DF-9 was basically intended to be Dwarf Fortress in space.

Not that that's a bad thing, but I think many more people now have an idea why Dwarf Fortress has been in development for about a decade, and Toady reckons it'll take another 20 years to complete.

I don't know, I would love to see what EA does to KSP, to be perfectly honest.

We have a saboteur amongst us :D.

First thing EA (or M$, or any other big shark) would do to KSP is "make is simpler and more usable by general population" aka make a dumb pew-pew game.

Squad can quit developing KSP. Indeed if they feel that future updates aren't going to drive enough sales to keep them turning a profit, they should and probably will.

However, should that ever happen, they've already come very far.

No, no no.

Squad made a deal with its players. The deal was that they would eventually release a finished game. Just deciding to quit once you've gotten enough money, even if the game isn't finished, is incredibly unprofessional and damaging to the company in the long run.

Having said that, I don't think Squad will just abandon the game. However, if they did, before it was finished, that would be a huge betrayal of everyone who paid for the game assuming it would be finished some day.

Squad, and I believe all "early access" developers, have been clear from the start: the version you buy may be the last.

Anyway, when to consider a game "finished" is something that's almost entirely up to the developers. Squad could call the next release 1.0 and be done with it, and none of us would have any right to disagree.

PS: I don't think they will, but it feels like KSP is coming close to completion. I won't be surprised if 1.0 is only two or three updates after the Unity 5 port.
