Planetary Symbols for the Kerbol System?

Recommended Posts

Inthe real world, astronomers use old symbols (greek/roman/latin, I don't actually know what their origins are) to denote each of the planets and other significant Celestial bodies. Par exemple:

Has anyone thought of, or made, symbols for the Kerbol system? If not, some artist should try something. :wink:

only just noticed my misspelling of "symbols"

oh hahaha, I didn't even know about the second one. Though.... planet, Pluto is not, lol

Of course it is. If a dwarf star is still a star, then a dwarf planet is still a planet.

BTW: Ceres also has a symbol. Not sure if Eris, Haumea, or Makemake do though.

Well, I had a quick go at them. Mainly going off the flavour text in the game.

15312050446_ed3765d880_c.jpg

Moho: A flaming volcano.

Eve: A well. As in gravity well, geddit.

Kerbin: A circled K.

Duna: An unequal dumbbell, representing Duna and Ike.

Dres: No symbol. Dres is always overlooked.

Jool: A monogram of JV, for Jool and its V (5) moons.

Eeloo: An ice-cube in a glass.

Mun: A depiction of the Mun's nearside.

Minmus: A screen with a dead pixel.

The other moons don't get symbols because they wouldn't have been known in Kerbal antiquity. Though if the game is to be believed no celestials were known in Kerbal antiquity.

Hey, those are great! Now someone with amazing digital drawing skills should make them into nice images.

Forget the flavor text, Minmus should be an ice cream cone.

Well, considering the fact your able to build a rocket on Year 1, Day 1, Hour 0.... what is antiquity?

So I gave the Moho one posted previously by Cantab a go with a couple tweaks

Sorry for ugly rims, sizing, and proportion.

EDIT: NEXT TO GO, EVE

EDIT 2: EVE

Intentionally nonsymmetrical.

That's all for tonight folks!

I thought some astrologist or alchemist created them but I'm not sure.

The symbols explained: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrological_symbols#Meanings_of_the_symbols

My try for the Kerbol system:

hkFupcY.png

There are squares around the symbols. Ignore them.

My approach was to imagine what Kerbals can see looking at the sky.

Sun

Simple symbol for brightness.

Moho

From Kerbin you can only see it when it's 90° left or right of the sun. In that case you can only see the half which is in sun light.

Eve

The same as Moho but with triangles because you probably see more details and/or Gilly.

Kerbin

These are two triangles at the top and bottom. Those are for "up" and "down" or sky and earth. What do you think how intelligent Kerbals can be? ^^

Mun

Shows the different mun phases.

Minmus

A lying eight or glasses. Later because you probably need them to see this moon. Or you can think of it as "second" moon.

Duna

Ice caps!

Dres

None. It's probably impossible to see from Kerbin with the naked eye.

Jool

It's a gas giant and like Jupiter and Saturn it's very bright in the sky. But not as bright as the sun, so less lines.

Eeloo

None. Too far to be seen from Kerbin.

What do you think of them?

They seem kind of off. I'd have enclosed them in circles rather then squares. I don't know why.

Also, I went and made a Duna! A large circle for Duna, enclosing a smaller Ike.

I'd love it if someone, especially the person posting above, could remake this. It's a cool concept in my opinion but I executed it poorly.

I made Dres since everybody else seems to be ignoring it.

dres_s10.png

It has a rough representation of Dres in the center, with its diagonal lighter band, and pentagons at the top and bottom that resemble the Ascending and Descending Node markers, hinting at its severe inclination. It also kind of looks like a "no" sign, which is appropriate for a dwarf planet labeled as "not to be trusted".

I did this a long time ago, and once used the symbols in craft names to keep them short.

Ѳ = Sun

á´ª = Moho

ÑŽ = Eve

ü = Gilly

ʘ = Kerbin

áµ¾ = Mun

Ô“ = Minmus

ÒŸ = Duna

ᶓ = Ike

á´• = Magic Boulder

ê = Dres

ä = Jool

δ = Laythe

Ѫ = Vall

Ѧ = Tylo

Ò¨ = Bop

ᶑ = Pol

â‚  = Eeloo

I'll give a few of these symbols a go! I hope I can get the planets right XD

UPD:

I dun it

wgspUZm.png

In order: Kerbol, Moho, Eve, Kerbin, Mun, Minmus, Duna, Dres, Jool, Eeloo

and the award for most needlessly complicated solar signs goes to me

Of the proposed symbols so far, I like these the most. They're in the same family or motif of our own planetary symbols.

They can also be copied from the character map and put into the name of your craft. If you know how to edit the registry you can use the unicode numbers values to type them on the keyboard without the character map.
