You can also use SketchUp, it's fairly simple to use.

I use it personally.

You still need blender for converting the SKP file to FBX (import into blender as SKP then export as FBX). Then, import the FBX file into Unity and you're ready to apply the KSP tools to the model, you know the procedure from there.

Besides SketchUp, there are a lot of other different modeling tools which are not as hard, but can still export FBX models.

I have done a majority of my modeling in Solidworks, and exporting it as STL. Though, I make sure to model components so that the mesh is game friendly (extrude/loft n-sided polygons rather than circles).

From there I can do any additional tweaks for triangle reduction, and its not too time consuming.
