More Part Rebalance

Recommended Posts

The last update had some much appreciated part rebalance - there is now a reason to use mainsails rather than LFBs, or skippers/poodles rather than clusters of smaller engines.

But there are still some parts that make one go... "huh? why would I use this?" others that just seem not well suited to their purpose

The first on my list may be a bit controversial, as it seems to have advantages, and is used, but if you check tavert's mass optimal charts... its basically never the engine to use....

*The Aerospike Engine, and other 1.25m engines

Its best used as a lander engine on worlds with little or no atmosphere, its got a very mediocre TWR, but a short profile and a good ISP, if you don't need gimbaling, its pretty much always better than a poodle (or a lv-909 cluster).

However, its most distinctive properties are:

- No attachments allowed below it

- ISP is basically constant with atmospheric pressue.

These two traits suggest its role should be that of a booster... but its TWR is pretty bad, making it poorly suited for this.

It weighs more than a LV-T30, the same as a T-45, and has significantly less thrust than both of them.

If we buff its TWR, then it further obsoletes the poodle, if we make its TWR equal to at least the LV-T45, it will basically obsolete the LV-T30

meanwhile the LV-909 is still pretty bad, with only a narrow range where it is better than the 48-7s- between the LV-N and 48-7s the LV-909 is ... lost

The LV-T30 engine gets lost in the mass optimal charts too, they're beaten by the 48-7s below it, and even the skipper above it.

So I propose:

LV-T45, LV-T30, and Aerospike all have their thrust set to 230, weight doesn't change. This is a ~7% buff to the LV-T30, 15% for the LV-T45, ~31.5% for the aero

-LV-T45 is more competetive... its currently got a high price to pay for 1 degree gimballing, this buff of 30 kN should help

-Aerospike should have its ISP nerfed to a max of 370 instead of 390 - so similar TWR, similar ISP to the other "large" 1.25m engines, but with better atmospheric performance (otherwise in space, same ISP, slightly worse TWR or same TWR but no gimballing) - this ISP nerf is the price for the thrust buff.

-LV-909... weight decreased 10% to .45

The tiny engines and their tanks:

-Nobody uses these smaller tanks because their mass ratio is so bad - make them the same 9:1 ratio as all the other liquid fuel tanks

-The LV-1/LV-1R engines... bad ISP + bad tankage ratio of the tiny tanks + OPd ion engine = why bother with this engine?

-In combination with the 9:1 tankage ratio change, I think these engines should have their ISP increased to at least 320, and thier TWR to at least 25.

Then there is the 48-7s... It dominates the mass optimal charts... its in the interest of gameplay to nerf it, so that people don't build high part count monsters that melt their computer.

I say nerf its thrust down to 25...

and there is the radial counterpart... the 24-77... worse TWR, worse ISP - buf its ISP to the same as the 48-7s, or buf its TWR to be the same, or some combination of the two. I suggest 22 kN thrust, 290-320 ISP.

Lastly.. the mk55 radial engine... poor ISP, poor TWR... Its just terribad... I've never seen a good use for it.

I'm fine with radial engines being a bit worse than inlines, due to their ease of placement, but the mk55 takes it too far

I'd give it the same ISP curve and TWR as the rapier.
