Spaceplane collides with distant KSC buildings while approaching runway

I was flying a spaceplane back from Minmus, and approaching runway to land, when a wing panel exploded. At exactly the same time, there was a distant explosion near the launchpad. Somehow the plane's wing had collided with one of the fuel tank buildings, even though it was nowhere near it.

I went back later in sandbox mode to measure the distance, and it seems to happen at a little bit over 2km distance.

That suggests that it's something to do with the KSC buildings being loaded back into the physics model? It was a long mission, and I had visited both minmus and the mun, so lots of memory use. Does that mean the KSC buildings need to be reloaded on approach, and glitch out during that?

I have noticed this issue in old versions, I don't think a cause was ever found.

Could you add the information detailed in this thread? If you can get it to reproduce, that is. If I recall correctly, this one was pretty hard to get to happen more than once in a row.

I had noticed this in .24 but thought it was one of my mods, now I'm starting to think it's spaceplane plus considering it's been the common thread.

I was working on the idea that it was something to do with memory, so I took a spaceplane out to look at lots of terrain. I flew on a close flyby of the Mun, then re-entered kerbin somewhere over the desert and flew around a bit at low level looking at ground, then went back to KSC to land. Result: mystery explosions. I don't think the spaceplane is anything special, but I've included the craft file just in case. The effect seems to happen exactly the same way if you cheat and use infinite fuel, so it's fairly easy to replicate.
