Dragging out lines of parts

Recommended Posts

What I'm thinking of is the ability to click and drag out a line/row of repeating, identical parts onto another part in the VAB/SPH. It's not a rehash of symmetry (honest!). To try and describe it further:

  • With the "line" (or "row", or whatever you want to name it) mode activated, left-click on an existing part in the VAB/SPH. Then, while holding down the left mouse button, drag in the direction you want extend the line of parts.
  • In a fashion similar to symmetry modes, hotkeys allow for the distance between each part in the line to be adjusted. For example, X could increase the distance and Ctrl+X could decrease it. The Shift modifier allows for the the distance to be changed in finer intervals.
  • The WASD hotkeys rotate each and every part in the line in the same direction.
  • Symmetry mode can be used in tandem with lines.
  • Each part in a line would be associated with each other in a manner similar to how symmetrically-placed parts are associated (e.g. adjusting a tweakable for one part in a line would affect all other parts in that line as well).
  • Taking into account the fact that a child part can't have more than one parent part (correct me if I'm wrong): A line can span only one part.
  • Part placement using this method is linear and restricted to a single axis.
    • I'm unsure about how this feature should behave with parts like the Mk2 Bicoupler and Mk2 to 1.25m Adapter Long. Compared to parts such as the FL-T800 Fuel Tank, NCS adapter, and Mk2 Liquid Fuel Fuselage, they're quite curvy. I'm unfamiliar with the low-level guts of KSP, so I have no clue how difficult it would be to implement functionality that has the VAB/SPH editors auto-adapt the angle of each individual part in a line to follow the shape of its parent part.

Nothing in that list is absolute, so feel free to point out alternatives to any of it (or even this whole idea).

Two random usage examples:

  • Dragging out a line of OX-STAT Photovoltaic Panels onto a vessel (akin to this).
  • Dragging out a line of Pegasus I Mobility Enhancer ladders onto a Modular Girder Segment XL part.
