SSTO orbit, save, load ,explode!?!

Recommended Posts

I've finally perfected my first ssto...got it into orbit...saved...had dinner...came back to kerbal, loaded the save.

There's my ssto, beautiful....give it a second for the physics to kick in and the thing explodes. Tried again with a 2nd ssto, same thing...reach orbit, save, load ,explode!

Not sure what's going on.....I'd just installed procedural wings, could be that....? Hmmm....

I installed Kerbal Joint Reinforcement, things are a little better....it doesn't explode any more. But now at seemingly random points my sleek procedural wings fall off. But Kerbal seems to think they're still attached to my plane the camera focus slides away always at a midpoint between my plane and its descending wings. I can still control the plane and deploy my chutes. Got crew and science home safely, kind of. I can switch to IVA but the external view is always half way between plane and it's wings.

Anyone seen this? Gonna try again with stock wings.....shame cos I love the procedural stuff.

Bob is dead dues to this....

Some kind of that accident happened to me too. Built a SSTO with stock parts and some parts glitching into each other (without f12).

Mainly the large wings had some octo-struts with intakes attached. Launch and ascending into orbit went without any incidents. The main part of re-entry went fine, too. As soon as I hit about 10km above ground, the left wing fell off. Luckily the vessel had so much SAS, so it still were barely controlable.

A few Km before KSC the right wing fell off, too. So I had to take eager measures and tried to land the SSTO like a rocket on its back. Landed with like 30 m/s and the whole plane broke apart. Some parts survived incuding the cockpit full of science.

Long Story.. Did you glitch some parts into each other? (With or without f12)

This is the first I've heard of F12 and the debug menu if that's what you're referring to. (I'll check that out tonight, gonna get me in more trouble I reckon) but no I didn't use that.

I did heavily mess around with the wings during construction though. There could well be a few stray struts hidden in there still, they stretc with the wings so I can see how that might cause probems. I'll try to get a pic later but I'm not sure what it'll tell you, it looks like a fairly standard SR-71 looking spaceplane to me.

Think I'll try again and replace with stock wings, if that works ok I'll try some new procedural wings but this time no faffing.

Ditched the wings and stuck some stock ones on.....much better, no issues at all now.....I'm sure the procedural wings are fine, think I mangled some struts stretching the wings around while trying to balance CoL and CoM.

When you've got wings made up of 2 or 3 wing parts, is there a way to weld the 3 together so you can slide back and forth as one? It's a pain setting the CoL when your wing is made up of 3 separate bits.

There are no ways that I know of to arbitrarily "weld" wing pieces.

The only trick that I can think of is attaching all your wings to a common parent wing which is attached to the fuselage, just like this ugly drawing shows it (no access to KSP right now, sorry):

When you will grab the green wing, all the child wings will come with it. It's a hack and led me to build ugly but easy to tweak planes.

If you prefer to use wings that are made of one bit and don't mind using mods, you can check the Procedural Wing mod.
