Wait... What?!

Oh, c'mon SQUAD...

So, the day before yesterday, I sent a PM to Rowsdower, stating that I would love to have my GoPro rocket video featured in a Video Wednesday. Sure enough, he PM'd me back and said that the video was really cool, and that I had gotten the coveted spot. Or, in SQUAD's words:

"UpsilonAerospace combined the usual goodness of a KSP cinematic with real life GoPro footage to make a unique, well crafted video that makes the best of both worlds."

and then, less than twenty-four hours later, KSP's social media feed says:

"UpsilonAerospace demos a cute little jack-o-lantern and a big "terrifying claw thing" in the opening episode of his new Grand Pumpkin Voyage series. What do you think he will do with the pumpkin in his next episode?"

...and shows off this video. Yep, two shoutouts in less than a day.

I just wanted to say to SQUAD:

1) Thank you so very much.

2) Wait, was there some sort of mixup? I've never seen this happen before.

3) If any of you guys have videos/pictures/other things that you made in the last couple of days, post them here! I feel guilty about the multiple shoutouts from SQUAD, somehow. I just want to share the love. :)

4) Where should I take that pumpkin next?

Thanks!

Ever seen them even mention something written? mhoram, Kashua or tavert's work, for instance?

Crash a rocket and film it, you've got Video Wednesday, Twitch Thursday, quite often Fanwork Fridays. This is all part of KerbalEdu, I think, Squad want to make sure kids watch enough TV ^^.

Having to pay for broadband and budget my time, I don't watch KSP videos unless they're short and teaching something very specific.

Only in the Threads of the Month, both Kasuha's Fuel Flow Rules and mhoram's Physics of KSP have been featured there. That thread is in Announcements though, far less exposure than the Daily Kerbal. I agree that compiling those sort of references should be featured as well, I've found them invaluable.

Congrats, Upsilon. Well deserved.

Thanks, Red Iron Crown. Coming from you, that means a lot. :)

I agree completely. The Daily Kerbal should include writing as well as everything else... video seems to be way overemphasized. (When a YouTuber is saying this, it means that this problem is pretty serious. :P)

When I started reading this, I thought it was going to be a hate/complaint post for some reason. Ah well, great to see ya so happy Upsilon. :D

(and thanks for sharing that love!)

I'm so obscenely happy, but equally baffled. I though that this wasn't supposed to happen, especially after many complained about people like Nassault saturating the KSP News Feeds and Daily Kerbal. I'm a long way from making videos as good as Nassault's, too. I honestly don't know why my videos were featured, as opposed to others'.

Would it help to know I didn't watch the Grand Pumpkin one? ;)

Not really, but thanks for trying ;)

I can't pretend to be neutral here, since my own fanworks are written, but yeah - it's been a while since the Daily Kerbal or the Thread of the Month featured any fan-fic. Which is a shame in my opinion since there's a lot of good written work on the Fan Works forum - including stuff that I would rate much more highly than mine, so please don't take this as a shameless plug!

Short stories, longer pieces, poems, spoof lyrics, after-action reports with varying numbers of screenshots - there's something there for most tastes.

These are interesting thoughts.

For implementing a "daily for written text" I see two issues:

- Squad must have the opinion that there is enough material produced by the community. I don't follow the written fanworks, so don't know about that.

- Squad seems to be focused on visuals and promotability in the dailies. Is written fanwork interesting enough to a broad publicum so that it would make sense to replace one of the other dailies?

So I am rather pessimistic that something like this will be done.

Doesn't have to replace anything in Fanworks Friday or be a regular weekly event, it'd just be nice to see something something written included ever! We've had cakes, paperwork (fantastic!), fancy-dress and videos, videos, videos - most of which (present company accepted, of course) are not actually well-made, narrated or edited. There is the language issue, of course, but really; who needs yet another video of someone failing to land on Mun?

This. I do follow the written fanworks fairly closely, and I agree - there's probably not enough there for a weekly slot. But it would be nice if they were mixed in with the other Fanworks Friday material occasionally.

For example - and speaking of Mun landings - tell me these words don't stir something in you...

They might not of course, but hopefully you'd agree that they're the kind of interestingly different take on a typical KSP flight that it would be nice to see highlighted every so often.

Let me just say, first of all, that while this thread is going in a direction that I didn't originally intend, I'm happy with the commentary that's going on. As long as people continue to offer appropriate commentary, I wish to keep this thread open. (Thanks, Moderators!)

Aw, don't be modest KSK. You're certainly one of the best writers in Fan Works. Also, I never thought of the spoof lyrics as writing... but I think that they're often just as enjoyable as a comparable-length video, if not more :)

Hey!

With all due seriousness, I think that videos do deserve a Wednesday: There's many of them, and some are relatively high-quality. However, the last three days of the week often showcase nearly the same content: There's a video (Twitch replay) on Thursday, and there's often a video on Friday. (There was, for example, a video on both Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.) I'm not going to discuss Twitch Thursdays, but this does seem like a video overload.

Perhaps, if there was only one day a week for YouTube videos instead of two, SQUAD would have a better chance to select videos that were "actually well-made, narrated or edited."

Again, I would love to see this happen once a month or so. That would be nice.

I was kinds hoping this would make it to community vid on Wed, or get a shout out, but it missed out!

Not bad, not bad. Again, though, it needs more lens flares.

Also, is this a preview for a video that's yet to come? I can't properly tell.

*Groan, headbut-desk* I haven't actually said anything nice yet, have I? Sorry about that. Well done on your mentions, I really, really expected a lot more *woot!* posts and didn't realise the extent to which I was derailing. Second time I came in was a flying visit and responded to specific point I saw.

Well, once in a while something from Mission Reports gets to be Thread Of The Week. Those featured to my knowledge have all be written works with illustratrations. The classic example is Brotoro's Long-Term Laythe Mission, a save that's been going since 0.18 or 0.19, through all the updates including 0.25. And he just posted Episode 38.

However, I do agree that purely written stuff in the top Fan Works forum should be in for more attention. The only such I can remember is Xactar's The Kerb Kerman Show!, which is how I even knew it existed. But there are a bunch of others I've read that were equally worthy of mention. But it seems like for the most part, stuff in the Fan Works forum is ignored unless it produces a physical object.

Uh - what Pecan said (again). *blushes*. In my defense, I did add a nice comment to the original thread, but yes - congrats on the official mentions!

Agreed about wanting more written things featured. I'm definitely not biased.

There could be enough for every week. Epic little things like that Gilgaman thing do pop up. But, most of the bigger, on going written things only update so often, so when they do would be a chance to show them off.
