A Very Modest Proposal: Quit to desktop

Recommended Posts

This basically explains itself, but here's the verbose version:

If I'm in a fullscreen game session and at the KSC overview, to exit the game i have to click the Menu icon (else: Esc), then I have to click Quit to Menu, then I have to wait for the text animation on the Start Game screen to execute, then I have to click Back again to return to the home menu, then I have to wait for another set of animations to execute, then I have to press Quit, and then finally I have to answer a prompt asking me if I really want to quit. [Hint: yes.] This is all just to get back to my own desktop.

Proposed amendment:

KSC Menu --> Quit to Desktop [Optional: confirmation prompt]

I know this is a small annoyance but I think most people will agree that in the long run it's the small warts that be most frustrating and unaesthetic of all at times, if you have to live with them long enough.

YES! YES! This would be amazing! I'm sick of either alt+entering and closing KSP that way or going through the entire main menu setup to get to the button. Heck, do it Skyrim-style and have the quit button give you the option of either Desktop or Main Menu!

Seriously, this would be such a nice little feature to have.

(ESC to Space Centre from flight) - KSC view - Alt-F4 - done.

When you enter the KSC view from flight, the game is saved anyway. Safe to Alt-F4 out of it from there (but as Xaiier said, make sure it's saved, so either KSC view, ESC, Quicksave as blah, OK, Alt F4 or if you're feeling lucky, punk, just straight up Alt+F4 from KSC view).

Yes Please... Oh while they are at how about a sleep button that when you restart the game it brings you right back in without half dozen click and waits.

Edit: oh further while they at it. How about having a consistent location for the quit button. From memory no two clicks to quit are in the same location on screen.

The latter is a common design feature. It lowers the likelihood that you'll quit the entire game by accident.

Common design feature is to ask for a confirmation when you're going to do something that cannot be reverted. Quitting the game in the main screen can simply be reverted; just restart the game. Quitting the game "by accident?" You have to get to that screen in the first place. I don't think anyone is quitting the game mid-flight, by accident, that way.

The "are you really sure" question makes sense if you do it in-flight and your progress wouldn't be saved and would be great if you press alt+f4 (or whatever the command is on other systems) mid-flight. As for now, it's cute ("yes, really quit") the first two or three times but is getting rather stale quickly after that.

Quiz: what would happen if that dialog was not there and the game would simply quit? Would people be upset? What damage would be done?

The only time it seems matters is if your craft can't go on rails then you get a warning that you can't quit or even switch away without loosing progress.

The final "Are you really sure" is already a good 6 clicks past that point anyway.
