What effect does reputation points have on the game?

So I've kind of been ignoring them, but now with .25 there is the ability to redirect them to science or cash. But I have no idea what effect they have on anything in the game, so I'm not sure how to allocate that.

I tried searching the forums for an answer, but I was unsuccessful in finding anything on it.

As your reputation increases you get more advanced and more rewarding contracts.
