I've known about it pretty much since I started working with turbojets at high altitudes, which was very early on, because I decided that turbojet vertical-ascent stages were interesting

It made sense as a feature, so it wasn't too shocking to me.

It's to make them overheat. That's what causes the engines to "go blue".
