KSP on new 5k retina iMac with upgraded R9 M295X graphics card?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone run KSP on the new 5k retina iMac with the upgraded graphics card option? And have you tried running the game at 4k or 5k resolution? Curious to know how it performs.

BTW not looking to incite any platform flames. I realize that if gaming were the only consideration, I could probably build an incredible dedicated gaming PC for less bux. There are other considerations at work here (OK, mostly of the "it's so shiny!" variety).

Apparently, when running the game on 4K, the UI is tiny, even on max UI size. That's something to be wary of, but other than that I don't know anything else about running the game on ultra-HD. Hopefully someone will make a mod for that or squad will make a better UI size?

I have Yosemite on a 2012 iMac with GTX 680MX and a Core i7; performance is mixed. Playing stock with medium graphics is okay, but adding mods and/or using better textures crashes every 10 minutes or so. No loss of performance, FPS consistently over 40, but crashing all the time. I have 32GB of RAM, but KSP can only use a couple. Fun game, but really unstable on Mac right now.

Some PC/Linux users have well over 20 mods, but I install five and it starts crashing consistently. I'd say go for it and just be patient with the dev team as they get all the bugs ironed out (and they do a pretty good job with that).

Mod count doesn't really mater, its about quality and compatibility. Or maybe its Yosemite

I have full realism overhaul setup, like 30 mods, on my 13'' retina with 8gb of ram running maverick and its quite stable.

Thanks to all for the tips on Mac KSP... I am actually less interested in that since I already run it on a Mac under Yosemite. I was mostly wondering whether the new iMac could support a decent frame rate at super-high resolution (4k or 5k), and for specific experiences with how it was affected as the part count got higher. But I appreciate everyone's thoughts on Yosemite etc. as well. Does anyone have KSP gameplay experience running at 4k+ resolution on the new iMac?
