Its WIP - it need to be tested on other installs and get feedback, so go ahead .

Short of writing a very involved plugin... the easy way to make them work is to make them functionally ladders. Any of the tutorials on adding ladders to command pods will get you there -

You add an empty game object with a box collider the defines the space where a kerbal could be hanging on (bigger box than your part - it defines where a kerbal's body has to be to be able to reach your part), with the blue unity arrow pointing in towards your station.

You set the game object to the part triggers layer, and give it the appropriate ladder tag, and tell the box collider that it's a trigger.

Import and test.

That's a loose run-down. The airlock and ladder tutorials (ignore the airlock part, of course) will give you the specifics about what to name the layers and tags (and capitalization counts).

Once you're on your way there, if anything doesn't just work, feel free to shout!
