Glue Kraken

Recommended Posts

So I've got a pretty damn unusual breed of Kraken here. It occurred during a play session, and continued to happen until I restarted the game. So, it may be due simply to my computer f'ing up, but I feel like I might as well post it anyway.

So basically, I was attempting to send a De-Orbiter unit into LKO (basically, a fuel tank with a bunch of chutes attached to it and a claw on the end). Normally, not a big deal.

In most situations, it works without a hitch. However, if I performed any sort of Time Warp while it is in focus, a very strange thing would happen. Something at the end of the ship (maybe the claw, maybe the probe core, who knows) would become kinematic (Unity-speak for "completely immobile in every way). This would cause the bottom of the ship (where the rockets are) to, well, do some strange stuff.

The rockets would fire fine, but since the top of the ship refused to move even an inch, the rockets would swing around and eventually snap off.

I managed to get into into LKO once, but when I tried to time warp there, the same thing would happen. The ship would come instantly to a halt, and any thrust applied would just throw around the back of the ship, while the front sits perfectly still.

I'm gonna attempt to re-create this tonight and get some clips of it occurring (if possible).

You can see in the pictures that the top section remains in place, even after the rest of the rocket has broken off and is flying around.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

If this is all stock, then please upload a .craft file.

The Claw is a buggy creation, but the root of the problem is hard to pin down. Your craft might help with that. :)

Cheers,

-Claw

Is indeed a stock craft, I'll upload the .craft file when I get home from work.

EDIT: What's a good site to upload the craft file to?

EDIT 2: My home internet is down this weekend, but I'll be able to upload the .craft file on Monday.

Aye, I think I've seen this before. The Claw suddenly just refuses to move. It's not so bad with your craft, but I've seen cases where it suddenly did so in orbit, causing the craft to spontaneously self-destruct as part of it suddenly decided to stop moving completely. xD

Excellent, thanks!

I will give it a try when I get the chance. Hopefully it will provide some useful info.

By the way, what did you do just prior to launching? I see you mention time warp, but did you do anything in particular in the editor before hand? Or just "launch" it out of the VAB, warp for a launch window, then throttle up and go?

Thanks,

-Claw

IIRC, I had: done a launch, reverted to VAB, modified, and launched again, reverted, modified, launched again, reverted, etc etc. Likely no more than 4 or 5 iterations. I had been playing for at least an hour or two at that point, but I can't recall exactly what preceded it.

Darn, I have tried all manner of reverts throttle up, down, while staging, under physical and non-physical time warp, time warp before, after... and still no luck. :(

Well, I'm going to move most of my work to the BUST thread on this topic. As for your craft, I suppose the easiest fix is to simply revert, restart KSP, and try launching it again. What's really weird is that once this sort of thing happens, the save file is permanently corrupt for that craft. So avoid saving after this happens if you can help it.

Thanks for the craft,

~Claw
