Best way to Constuct IVA Base on Kerbin (Physics Wise)

Recommended Posts

I'm building a base on Kerbin to simulate an IVA of a large space ship. I'm building it so I can shoot a fun little KSP video series, where the Kerbals can walk around the inside of the ship.

Anyways, I'd like to bounce some ideas around as to the best way to do this.

My first idea was to actually build the entire thing in Blender, then just plop the thing down through the VAB (almost like a mod). But I have almost no experience in Blender, and I think that may be over my head.

Second would be to build it and weld all the pieces together using a mod. Which I'm probably going to do some tests with tomorrow to see how it works.

I'm mostly worried about plumitting framrates due to part count and light sources. Frame-rates will need to stay at 30fps or above; and while I have a good gaming computer, it's more of the unity engine's limitations which are going to be the problem.

Any other suggestions or input from the community?

You can take a look at Bob Fitch's (named felbourn here on the forums) youtube channel for some inspiration when it comes to welded parts and performance optimization. There are lost of infos there. I can also recommend the Duna One series on youtube by Vaos, when it comes to nice scene setup without using any mods. Good luck on your mission :)

I'd been thinking of doing something like this for a vid I really want to make (just never seem to have the time for!). I wasn't going to go blender or anything fancy like that, just thinking of using hollow structures fro the craft. We're basically talking about "how to fake a moon landing", so what we really need for that is a set, or at least a dark box to put it in so external light doesn't shine in. So I was thinking of putting the craft inside a large box made out of those large panels from B9 and obviously filming it at night. I think that will cut out most light, but it might cause other 'unforeseen consequences'. It may be better to hyper-edit the film set onto the far side of Mun and wait for night fall, actually on reflection the box idea is dumb, this would be better.

I'm interested to see what you come up with in the end.

The Hollow Structures and Hulls mod does exactly what you want. It's out of date and might take while to get updated, though. If needed, there are alternative links on page 43.

That seems pretty neat, but I cannot get the download to work, even with the links on page 43.

Looking into building parts using unity now.
