Migrating all mods from WIndows KSP install to Linux version - How to?

Recommended Posts

So am fed up with the windows version of KSP and want to migrate my game saves and mods over to the Linux version. Is this a straight forward process? What do I need to know? Has anyone tried this with success? Do all mods transfer over?

The mods are simple: you just extract them as normal into the GameData folder. You might lose settings, but that's it; very few mods use libraries which aren't cross-platform. It may even be possible just to copy the contents of your GameData folder, although I'd prefer to do fresh installs.

Savegames, I think you might just be able to copy-paste the folder with your save in it.

Yes, mod settings. Most mods, including FAR, RealChutes, and TAC Fuel, keep a settings file in the mod folder – that's why the settings persist across saves. A few save settings in the persistence file. KAC 3.0+ stores some settings in each.

oh okay...well everything looks good and the game runs. Now the only mod not working with the Linux version is Kerbal Konstructs. This is the mod that lets you launch at different facilities and add static buildings and props to Kerbin. The thing is people are getting the mod to work but I dont know how they are?

The regular version of kerbal konstructs works just fine last time i checked. It runs just fine on my machine.

I tried the whole "dump your gamedata folder from Windows to Linux" thing into an otherwise working stock game and started getting hard lockups during load (as in, locking the whole OS, which I thought wasn't even possible in Linux). I think Linux just hates me. Seems no one else has these problems. ;.;

more issues found...........and on a more serious note

1. The number pad does not work

2. Other various keyboard keys such as Alt-F12, Mouse-Alt , or Alt to use SAS will leak unto the Ubuntu desktop shutting down the computer.

3. Mouse movement is way too fast

Id go on with my life with at least having full keyboard support in Linux.

IIRC there is no fix for the numpad issue as yet... the workaround is to assign the numpad for action groups and use the alpha keys for number entry.

I have become so used to this setup that I forgot it was a bug :)

Uncheck 'fullscreen' in the settings menu?

As to running on a specific monitor, that depends what window manager you're running ;)

If you're using Gnome, check out DevilsPie for per-window placement rules and scripting.

IIRC (it's been a long while) compiz has a 'put' plugin to control window placement.

KWin has similar functionality under 'System Settings' -> 'Window Behaviour' -> 'Window Rules'

All assuming you're running multiple monitors as one big desktop. If you have separate X screens set the DISPLAY environment variable to specify which one you want it to launch on.
