"Rosetta" -- A KSP Short Film, and Its Explanations

I know this is a few days later than the actual landing, but hey, it's here afterall.

I spent a week recreating the mission and record it. I finished putting it together three days ago.

OK, this is the video you guys are looking for. If the embed thing doesn't work for you, click

.

If my video on YouTube happens to be blocked in your area, I'm sorry about that. But don't be sad, I've also got you covered.

So let me do some explanations regarding this mission. I recommend you to watch the video first, so at least you know what I'm talking about.

I am not going to post the pictures one by one, just because they're huge.

-- This is about Rosetta:

I have four KW's 1.25m tanks clipped inside the metal frame, to provide fuel to the engine. I also have a reaction wheel, some batteries, and some monoprops inside the frame. That's basically the body of the Rosetta probe. In tradeoff of the fuel, I don't have much space left inside the probe for Philae lander. It was hanged under the probe body.

I used an IR hinge to move Philae before separation, so that it wouldn't glitch or explode. In the "fold-up" state, it is actually partially clipped inside the Rosetta probe.

You might have noticed, I've got a KAS magnet underside Rosetta. It's used to stick the probe to the asteroid when Philae performs the landing.

Erm, that's all about the probe that I can think of, ask if you want to know more.

-- This is about Philae:

Yep, it is the three-legged little probe lander that made history. Even some failures occur in real life, it... ...still did a great thing. In my version, it does have solar panels that cover a half of the probe body, a grappling hook, and some science equipments. The real Philae has two sets of grappling hook, which I only have one; and the real one only have one cold-gas thruster. I used two RCS ports to resemble the thrusters, which will more or less help it move around. It does have a DMagic drill thingy as a part of science equips. The only thing that my version doesn't have at all is the screw on the landing legs.

It does have a small 0.625m monoprop tank clipped inside the probe core for the RCS.

Again, that's what I can say right now, just ask if you want to know more.

-- This is about the rocket:

It does have two SRBs, one liquid core stage. It does have a little bit too much Delta-V, from the separation of the core stage 1 to the end of orbital insertion burn, the second stage still have a bunch of fuel left. The last stage, the Solar Trajectory Injection Thruster (STIT), also have too much fuel, it can push the whole thing to escape velocity with 35% of fuel left.

There's isn't really much about the rocket, it's just... ...a rocket, pretty straight-forward.

-- This is about the comet, 67P/ Churyumov-Gerasimenko:

I used FASA Asteroids for that. Two reasons, first, it has some gravity, so the landing will be more realistic. And second, its size and shape are more controllable than stock asteroids. Yes, I once tried to edit the config file of stock asteroids, and turns out, their shapes and sizes are never controllable, it basically procedurally generated into random shapes. In addition, you can't stack them. They will blow up on the pad. I mean, literally, blow up, all over the place, sky-high, [just like this] . So I decided to not mess with them. The only bad thing about FASA Asteroids is their gravity won't work under any time warp. (Not physical warp)

Ast. 2687 "Å teins" and Ast. 21 "Lutetia" are from FASA Asteroids pack as well.

And, I admit that I did use Hyperedit to put them into solar orbit. Well, who would want to put a thousand-ton thing into a solar orbit which has a apoapsis beyond Jool's orbit?

-- And I'm gonna be really nice and give a list of mods I used:

Core Mods:

KW Rocketry

Near-Future Solar

D-Magic Orbital Science

FASA Asteroids

Procedural Fairings

KerbCam

Mechanical Jeb

Station Part Expansion

Hull-Camera VDS

Infernal Robotics

Kerbal Attachment System

Auxiliary Mods:

Trajectories

Active Texture Management

TweakScale

Tweakable Everything

Toolbar Plugin

TAC Fuel Balancer

Part Catalog

OK, I guess that's all.

Where? I am pretty sure wrote "film". Or else, it just a awkward typo...

The Swedish chef, in the very first original Muppet Movie was the one working the projector in the movie theatre. I can still hear him today:

"De flim is okey dokey!"

I seriously thought you did that on purpose as a shout out!

And very impressive work, btw!

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!! well done :D Love to see these and always expecting more - so do some more :D I'd like someone to do a series a cross between nassault and scott manley - have a big epic series with a goal but in this sort of style - well theres the suggestion.

Also - the imgur album tag is [imgur ]album[/ imgur] (without spaces so yours is [imgur ]srtLN[/ imgur]

Thanks, I fixed that in my post.

I personally feel like I might make more Scott Manley style videos, because short movies are long and hard to make. In comparison, for Scott Manley style vids, you just merely need to record it, add a intro, outro, and some caption for it. In this case, you don't even have to have a BGM for it.

Ahh, gotcha.

The video still doesn't work for me, sadly - Still got "Video not available" :(

I'm pretty curious, because I'm doing a rosetta replica myself at the moment... But its in no way as good as yours as far as I can tell from the screenshots ;)

PS: It's not only the embedded version, even the "original" right at youtube won't play :(

Don't know whats up with youtube, but the music should not have been the problem since I'm using ProxTube to avoid this issue.

Nevertheless, Vimeo worked for me. Big thanks to you!

Great video!

I got at least a few ideas for my next missions, although I wont be able to capture them the way you did! ;)

Either my eyes are going bad, or it's in the first 15 seconds of the clip.

Oops... ...

Either my eyes are going bad, or it's in the first 15 seconds of the clip.

I re-uploaded the one on Vimeo, which should be back shortly, and the one on YouTube has been fixed with caption.
