So, I was playing around last night trying to see how fast I could get a craft to spin and came up with a model that worked great!

There are some things with the physics that I don't understand tough if you watch the movie. Once the SRB's burn out there's nothing more then the air passing the winglets that can make it spin, when the vertical direction changes and it starts to go down it should change rotation but it doesn't. The cool bonus is that it magically slows down and perform a sweet landing! :D

It doesn't HAVE to switch rotation direction.

It is spinning so fast that the momentum of the spinning mass keeps it going in one direction.

When it is traveling downwards, the wings are still "probably" creating some sort of upward force (why it falls so slowly), but their upward lift is less than the weight of the craft.

Just like how a helicopter's rotors don't reverse direction when it descends...

Plus... KSP aerodynamics model, so who really knows exactly what's going on.

True, but the force is pushing on the other side of the wing... but I think you're right about the stock dynamics... I'll install FAR and see what happends :D

[edit]

Yup, installed FAR and now the rotation stops, tilts over and tumbles to earth as it should!
