Steam Cloud for save files and maybe mods if you can

Recommended Posts

Hey there ksp crew,

I'm playing the game on 2 pcs and I forgot to upload my saves and mods this time so I cant continue my Kerbin's journey :(

I noticed that there is an option in steam for cloud uploads (Skyrim uses it, works really good), do you think you can get it in your system?

Thanks a lot,

Maor :)

Playing on a laptop + pc, I know the problem :(

Probably not my highest priority, but it would be nice to have it as an option, at least the save files. I imagine the mod part to be srsly difficult since mods aren't downloaded from the steam network (so don't mention space engineers, it won't work like that ;) )

The problem with using steam-only features such as cloud or workshop is that there is a significant number of players who play ksp DRM-free. Therefore, the devs have two choices: 1) maintain two different versions of KSP (massive time sink), or 2) don't use steam features. So far it seems they're going with option 2, and I'm okay with this.

You could leverage non-steam cloud services. For instance, install KSP within a dropbox subfolder (remember, there's no DRM on the steam version, you can copy or move the install folder to anywhere). Though the sheer size of the installation + mods would likely outgrow the 2GB space dropbox gives with a free account, this could be an option if you already pay for dropbox.

I haven't used Google Drive much, but if it's possible to use it the same way as dropbox, I think they offer a whole 15GB of storage tied to your existing gmail account.

You can also use something a little out of the ordinary, for example you you could have your GameData and your Saves folder actually stored elsewhere (say, your Dropbox folder, for example), and create symbolic links within the KSP folder which point to these locations. That way, you can have KSP run normally through Steam, and have your saves automatically backed up over Dropbox or whatever cloud solution you choose to use. Hard links should work as well.

I could be mistaken. But anything Steamworks related (Achievements, cloud, etc) is code that is simply ignored if Steam is not running. So if this is the case. SQUAD can put the code in and it would simply do nothing for those who do not use Steam.

I can't say I'm an expert on this, but all of the games I've encountered that use Steamworks features are also Steam-only. If there are any exceptions to this rule, I'd love to know.

While the suggestion of using symbolic links has merit, I can't help but think (with all due respect) that perhaps this suggestion is grossly overestimating the level of an average gamer's knowledge and familiarity with a computer.
