So, I'd love to build my own satellite network.

Problem is, whenever I get a launch to about 9km, my engines just cut out, and crash back to earth.

I have a deployed antenna. What am I doing wrong?

Did your antenna stay on and what one you using sounds like you lost signal.

EDIT- Are you using RSS or RO ?

EDIT- And on the spin left you using MJ and just that the crafts has more weight or drag on that side but MJ there is a roll setting.

Spinning may be because of the rocket structure. Check center of mass and direction of thrust from the VAB editor. About the comm problem, are you using an omni-way antenna? Others won't be able to pick up signals from ground control as far as I know.
