what is the KIA window?

i know its probably really simple but why does my IVA window say KIA where the kerbal should be?

KIA stands for "Killed In Action". It says he's dead.

Why does this happen? It happens to me when i am in a craft that crashes and then my focus auto changes to another close by craft. I can still EVA the KIA kerbal.

the KIA screen is pretty old, I don't remember the version in which it was replaced by the kerbal portraits being removed (maybe .16-.21?). It still creeps in every now and then :/

It's a bug, and it is caused by this exact scenario. I once had the KIA screen not show, and what laid underneath looked like the Kraken got hold of the poor thing.
