zero experience... as in no 3D, no Texturing, no Unity experience? or zero experience as in know some 3d/texture; just never made anything for KSP?

if latter: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/94638-New-Mod-Development-Links-Compilation

if former I suggest starting with some basic 3D tutorials with blender and put modding off for a while.

Its not a simple process. Its like if someone said, I would like to build a house and I dont have any tools or experience. I have lived in a house how hard can it be.

So your first step should be build a really small house with simple tools.

I suggest you just make a small simple fuel tank first and get that in the game to start with.

If you start off trying to make a Star Destroyer or an exact replica of ISS, you will be overwhelmed very quickly and end up hating it.

Free, open source image editing software, kind of like Photoshop.

Also I highly recommenced actually downloading Photoshop CS2. It is now offered for free from Adobe.

Blender another free open source modeling program

Again I highly recommend learning a professional product either 3Ds Max or Maya

Max and maya both have a version that is free for students.

And of course Unity, basic version is free and good enough for modding KSP.
