I want an electric guitar

My sister had an electric guitar, but she lent it out and it came back in pieces >_>

Music store just told me it would be better to just buy a new one.

I\'m only starting out, but I\'m enjoying myself so far with my acoustic guitar.

Main reasons I want an electric guitar are for the:

Slenderness - Acoustic is bulky and makes my arm ache. Especially when playing on my bed, which is where I really like to play.

Sound - Acoustic is nice, but I want something less twangy and a bit smoother sounding

Electric - I really like the idea of being able to plug my headphones into the guitar and playing for myself without bothering others

Look - :P I\'m kinda shallow

So what would you say? Should I bother getting one at all since I\'m just beginning?

How much would you suggest I spend? A large part of me says go cheap as possible since I\'m new (which would be like ~$100), but another part of me says go for something a bit nicer that I\'ll really enjoy looking at/playing to give me some more motivation to play ~$200-$300. $300 is pushing it for me though).

If I don\'t get a new guitar, I might get a new GPU. But I\'m really craving an electric guitar for some reason...

Sounds like you\'ve got a pretty cheap acoustic guitar, and probably nylon strings as well, so I think you should see what playing a decent acoustic guitar is like before you give up on acoustics entirely; that said, electrics are fun, and they have some capabilities that acoustics don\'t necessarily have (i.e. amp effects), in addition to the cool-factor (:P).

My advice would be to find someone who isn\'t trying to sell you anything, and ask them to show you around a bit.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I has more questions.

I don\'t plan to give up acoustic entirely, I just want another guitar to play I guess. I don\'t care too much for the sound of acoustics, truly.

I found a shop a little ways from here, seems pretty nice and the salesperson there didn\'t really behave like a sales-person, just a friendly informer :D

He had new, simple guitars around $150 I believe, pretty basic, nothing super special, but cheaper than the other place I was at.

I told him I wanted something to learn with as a beginner, but I don\'t want some crappy that I wouldn\'t want to play.

So that said my price range is ~$200, but preferably below.

I was told I shouldn\'t have to go about $200 for something like that, and he pointed me to a used DBZ Barchetta.

http://www.dbzguitars.com/guitars/electric-guitar/barchetta/fm-fr-plus

Retail price he said was somewhere around $240, and he\'s selling it for $179 (it\'s used remember).

I didn\'t see any real flaws with it, but I didn\'t get a good look at it. I kinda trust this guy\'s word enough to assume it\'s in good condition for consideration (I\'m obviously going to look for myself before purchase).

The one thing that really struck me was the V-neck on the guitar, seems like I\'d really like it and would prevent some thumb cramping I\'ve been getting.

I\'m just wondering if anyone knows much about the guitar itself, quality and play-wise.

If I do find any flaws, I\'d just go with one of the new basic ones (I like the sound of new). But for about a $20 difference, I\'m more than willing to consider something of higher quality.

Sounds like you could use a Fender Squier

I got one myself and its prob\'ly one of the best 'cheap guitars' you can find... Plus, it kinda suits most styles, being a rather general-purpose instrument ::)

Either that, or maybe get a steel string acoustic... Those arent as bulky as nylon, and have a more electric-like grip on the fretboardand all....

Ah I suppose I should have updated it.

I went ahead and bought the guitar. It was $169, while the newer cheaper quality ones were $179.

I asked about the previous owner, and apparently they guy got it for christmas, and just wanted to trade it in for a Les Paul, so it was in fine condition.

I\'m really liking it so far. The strings are a little thin for my taste, pushing too hard affects the tone of the note (the fret board isn\'t scalloped, just really thin wires), but that requires a bit of abnormal force.

I press a little too hard because my acoustic has much thicker strings compared to this, plus the action is a lot lower.

It\'s much much easier to play than the acoustic, and sounds very different. I love how mellow it sounds, it\'s exactly what I wanted. I know the sound changes based on a number of things like the strings, amp, pickups etc etc so I don\'t plan on changing much about it\'s setup now until I learn more.

Plus, it looks really nice :D

I have a new appreciation for my acoustic, I still like to play it. I discovered I do like the tone in some respects. It\'s also just the lack of cords needed I guess ;P it\'s nice to just pick up and play, not needing to plug stuff in.
