Staging flies apart instead of separating.

Recommended Posts

This has been happening for a while, and is still happening in the latest version.

Basically if I launch a rocket with the bigger parts (Rockomax Jumbo 64 etc) and have a couple of stages for asparagus staging, the second or third stage desintergrates instead of just detaching.

I often have a couple of stages of 2-symmetry jumbo64 tanks. Any solid boosters and the first two tanks separate fine at ~5000m, but when I get up to around 10km-15km and detach the next 2 jumbo64 tanks, instead of just detaching, every part of that stage (tank, engine, sepatrons, winglets) separate from each other and fly off in different directions, usually destroying the rest of my ship in the process.

I often try to work around it by cutting throttle when staging, and slowly increasing to avoid hitting the debris too hard, but that still doesn't stop it from flying apart in the first place.

I'm on win7 64 steam version.

Pictures and a .craft file would be really helpful for us to sort this out. There is a stage decoupler bug, but I'm not sure if that's what you have going on.

Check out this thread. It'll tell you how to find your info.

Thanks.

Ok here's the .craft file for a new test ship I built to demonstrate the problem: https://www.dropbox.com/s/j2eib4j4w312gr3/TestShip.craft?dl=0

And here's a video of it happening: http://youtu.be/ejiAmjSVbiA

At the start you can see the first stage separates fine. Then towards the end the second stage (which is an alt-click duplicate of the first stage, with a modified fuel line placement) flies apart and destroys the ship. After that the other stages appear to be working fine again.

Yeah, from the looks of that video you are running into the radial decoupler bug. It gets worse as you go faster, until you reach 750 m/s. There are a couple options.

1) Design your staging to drop off below around 300 m/s, or above 750 m/s.

2) Try one of the fixes proposed in this thread. You're looking for this spoiler: [0.25] Radial Decouplers Not Decoupling Correctly (parts collide) – [PARTIAL FIX / ADD-ON FIX]

3) If you're not opposed to using mods, you can download my fix modules here. Specifically you're looking for the AnchoredDecouplerFix. I'm a bit biased, but this really is the best option since it will completely solve this problem.

Cheers,
