x86 game version CTD's while the x64 version does not

Recommended Posts

I'm running windows 8.1 x64, 6 gigs of RAM, 4 gigs of VRAM, GTX 760, 4 core i3 @ 3.4 GHz.

When trying to open KSP (x86) either directly or through the launcher it will not load at all and instantly spout a 0xc0000005 error in the crash.log file. No loading screen or anything. While using the x64 version of the game, however, it will load up fine. I've had no errors with 64 bit. I've looked around the forum for any other people that have had the same problem and I've tried all of the suggestions made in those threads, but nothing has worked.

While I could use 64 bit only for the time being I'd really like to be able to use 32 bit as certain mods disable themselves in x64.

I have solved the problem.

Well, it's not a RAM issue, that's for sure. It doesn't even get around to loading anything, it just straight-up crashes. That's really weird. Nothing unusual (for a crash, anyway) in the error.log.

Hmm. Can you upload a DxDiag?

Hmm, seems all fine. Which is weird, because the error seems to originate from an xinput dll. Unusual, for sure -- most crashes tend to originate either from the Mono assemblies, or KSP itself... Well, in the interest of narrowing things down, it is worth installing DirectX 9; the logs seem to point to the error originating from there, after all, as unusual as that is. You can download the runtime from here. It's unusual to need to, but although DirectX 11.2 comes hand in hand with windows 8.1, KSP usually uses DX9 (unless you force it to run DX11), and you might need to install the DX9 libraries to get things working.

Compatibility is weird. In fact, this whole crash is weird, though funnily enough not the weirdest I've seen recently. :P

Well, I tried those libraries and they didn't do anything. I still got the (almost) exact same crash. However, I looked through the error log again a saw RivaTuner Statistics Server on there. RTSS provides MSI afterburner with screen cap and fps tracking. Apparently RTSS doesn't play nicely with KSP. I killed all instances of the program (41 instances! now I know where all my ram went) and KSP started up nicely. This also explains why x64 worked while x86 crashed as RivaTuner cant detect x64 software without help.

Still, thank you for the help!
