I got my own Voyager project -- by accident!

Contract calls for testing a Mk 25 contract. With no other "device test" contracts available, I slap something simple together that will get me at the desired altitude and speed. All goes well... and then I realize that the mk 25 is a drogue, and not a true chute. As this will not land well, I reason “sod it†and go for max time accel to quickly end the mission and get over it.

Well.... Mr. Probodobodyne OKTO decided that the ocean is actually bouncy instead of deadly. As I'm wondering what's happening and take a good look at the remaining spare part I notice its speed... over 52 km/s.

It's quite impressive to see something move fast towards Minmus orbit in real time. Curious to see what Kerbol orbit I'd end up with.. Yeah, about that...

Oh that? Jeb left a piece of buttered toast on the top of the probe. Seeing as buttered toast ONLY can land butter side down, and the toast in question was butter side up, It had no option but to repel the weak hands of gravity and fly skyward once more.

I was messing around with an old Mk3 spaceplane back in 0.23.5 next to the Astronaut Complex when it exploded and glitched out, and I had to close the game.

When I returned, a lone Mk3 cockpit was well beyond Eeloo orbit and showing no signs of stopping.

I renamed it "Interstellar Mission" and left it there.

IMO, it is a true chute, and you should have seen if it would work.

It makes about 2/3 the drag of the mk16 parachute, which should translate to a 21% higher landing speed.

Depending on what it is that you are trying to land, a mk25 by itself can be just fine (even if a mk16 would land it even slower, and has less mass)

A small probe landing at 7 m/s with an mk16 would land at 8.5 m/s with a mk25.

For the terminal part of your descent, its the worst chute, but its a chute none-the-less.

IMO, it doesn't behave veyr drogue like. Given its stopping power is roughly comparable to a mk16, I figure I could just use mk16s as the first chutes to open, or stagger the opening of the radials.

So as far as opening a weak chute first, so that when the strong chutes open, they don't rip the craft apart... its not really that weak,

Now that we have tweakable deployment altitudes, I can have a mk16 open first.

It does have the highest semi-deployed drag state: 4x that of the others per unit mass. IMO its still too low, and it needs to be higher... I'm thinking 1/10th its fully deployed drag... like 17 instead of 4.

Then, lastly, there is the ability to deploy/semideploy at a lower air pressure, which only really matters on Duna, 10km minimum deployment for the mk25, vs 9km for the others.... not enough to make a difference unless you are aiming to land at a high elevation on Duna.

I mod my Mk25s to make them less of a proper chute, and more of a proper drogue chute.

Lol... i had something similar happen, on my jool atmospheric probe. during descent, i looked down at around 2km and noticed half of jool was gone and i could see laythe. i transmitted all my SCIENCE, and continued to let it plunge. however, at negative 20-22m, my probe spontaneously ripped itself apart, and the two pieces that survived were shooting out of the kerbol system at 80% the kerbal speed of light. one of them was the quad-adapter heatsheild i was using with one of the science bays and battery packs still on, and the other was the probe core with the 88-88 antennae. after the interstelllar debris/probe was 2x past eeloo, i deleted the adapter debris and continued tracking the probe, which i had renamed "Interstellar T1 (test1)" andd pointed the antennae toward the sun. but after around 8 trillion kilometers out, i exited the tracking station after viewing the probe again, and my whole space center was glitching out. quickly restarted ksp and terminated the probe :(
